Most of the time I search for both, but some times I only listen to the guitar and drums. An example would be this song called "Hell awaits" from slayer,I'm not a fan of the lyrics, but I really enjoy the beat in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgEHpbUX2ZoSome examples of when I enjoy both the lyrics and beat are Rock N' Roll Train,Highway To Hell,Attila,Through The Fire And Flames and Sweet Child Of Mine, This is a few examples

That was the first MCR song I heard, and at the time I was being tortured by these teenagers on my bus. C: I related myself to it, but it's also very catchy. Yeah, exactly!

Well, for me, it's both.
Lyrics: If a song has lyrics (and I do like a lot of songs that don't have lyrics), I have to find the lyrics to be something to my liking in order to like the song. It's been a quirk of mine... it's really why I don't like a lot of the alternative rock and metal bands that are popular, as their lyrics often seem to be venting anger or sadness, or just trivial stuff, or nothing at all. The lyrics need to be either uplifting, or if they're about sadness and anger, very creative. (Listen to Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull to understand what I mean by "creative." Uplifting lyrics is something exemplified in bands like Angels & Airwaves)
Beat: A song's gotta have a unique beat or rhythm to it. In fact, what I like about the beat of music, is that if you have a good beat without lyrics, sometimes the beat can say more about the song than lyrics can! "Piano Smasher" "Exhibit 13" and "Club Nowhere" by the Blue Man Group are good examples of that. That's also what soundtrack composers use to their advantage in soundtracks, since soundtracks rarely have lyrics. Therefore, these composers know just how to get across any kind of feeling without using lyrics! (Try listening to the Lord of the Rings soundtracks and search for the Rainbow Six: Vegas soundtracks on YouTube to get a feeling for that.)

But lyrics mean alot to, if I relate to it then I'll like it, which is why the ones above are my favorite songs! But, I guess for me....both! "Don't Trust Me" is a phantastic song!
