All the dogs in Nome were sitting on the sides of the street, talking about who was going to win. “I say Balto!” “Maybe, but Steele has the upper paw.” A shy wolf stood on the sidelines, keeping to her self. Made sense, nobody would talk to her. Her name was Marro, and she just got off a plane from Newark airport, a direct flight into Nome. She was cold, hungry, and tired with nobody to care for her. “Brrrr, where are the hot dog stands on the corners? Geeze, this ain’t New York, is it,” Marro said, turning into an alleyway. Of course there were no hot dog stands, no hot pretzels, no “SHUT UP!!!” Marro stopped her self. The wolf had gotten off the plane the day of the Idarod, a big race for dogsled teams. She was planning to watch the race, but she needed to find something to eat first. She walked along and stumbled into the local butcher throwing out some meat. Crunch! The man stepped on Marro’s paw. “Oh, I’m sorry! Didn’t see you there!” he laughed. “Aw, are you hungry?” he asked, catching Marro eyeing the sausages in his hand. “Here, you can have ‘em! Balto’s pup, Aleu somehow got to them. Now they are worth nothing,” he said, giving them to the starving wolf. They were surprisingly good. “Wow, you actually like them?! Aleu threw them out; she didn’t like what’s in ‘em. Do you know what’s in them?” Marro shook her head, still chewing. “Caribou meat mixed with, and this is the lining, deer skin!” Marro shrugged. She had eaten all those things and more. Hey, the dirty water dogs were made from (and all of you wolves and dogs out there, this is what your eating when you eat from the street venders in NYC) mixed, grounded up meat with a lining of pig intestines. Yep, Marro had certainly eaten a whole bunch of things what most dogs wouldn’t even touch. The butcher laughed. “If only all dogs were as grateful as you. You eat anything don’t ya? You certainly like food, and I can see you are grateful. Well, you are welcome anytime!” Marro thanked him with her eyes. “Aw, don’t mention it. You’re a sweet kid. Now get, you better not miss the race. Came back soon! Say, do you know how to open trash cans with snap on lids?” Marro nodded. She spied one with clamps in the corner of the meat locker. She walked in and with her teeth unlocked it and carried the lid back to the butcher. “What a smart dog!” he cried. “Now, that’s what I use to throw out old meat I can’t use anymore. If you can open it, you can have whatever meat is in there. And if there is no meat, just paw on the door, I will give you something. Now run along now, don’t miss the race. AND CHEER FOR STEELE!!!!” he called after her. Marro didn’t know who Steele was, until she saw a big poster of a black and white malamute on the front window of a shop. It said STEELE on it, so she guessed it was him. He was HOT, Marro had to admit. It seemed a lot of people were rooting for Steele, but there were a few “Balto” posters around, too. Marro was impressed. She found a small “Love at First Sight” thing going on inside her, but she tried to shake it off. She didn’t believe in that. As she made her way through the crowds of people, she caught sight of two sled teams racing neck to neck. Steele, the one Marro thought was h to the o to the t, was in the lead, and the dog that looked like Bingo (aka Balto), the brown one, was a dog behind. “The Golden Collar is mine!” Balto smiled. “Not in your life, wolf-dog. Steele’s voice came to Marro as smooth and sexy, even through the growls. She smiled as the teams past the butcher’s shop, whom of which was leaning out the window and yelling “GO STEELE!!!” Marro held her breath as Balto passed Steele. “We are gonna win!” a red dog cried behind Balto. “Come on Steele!” Marro cried, dropping the chain of sausages to the ground. She bent down to pick them up, but they stayed in a puddle, there were 17 little weenies!! Balto’s paw crossed the finish line, but at the same time a black and white streak blew the sausages up off the ground and around Marro’s neck like a scarf. The crowd went silent. Marro realized that it was so close no one knew who won. “And the winner is, Steele!” The crowd went wild. Marro howled, jumping up and down. “Go Steele!” she cheered with the rest of the crowd. “Steele keeps the Golden Collar again! The undefeated champion!” the announcer screeched. Marro found herself in the middle of the street, looking around for a place to eat her sausage scarf. “Hell-o m’lady,” a voice behind her said. She recognized that tone! It was smooth and sexy, like the words from the race! Marro was used to guys flirting with her, so she played it cool. “So, you enjoy the race? You seemed to be pretty happy when, MY team won,” Steele said smoothly. “Yeah, I sure did! I’ve never seen the races live before. Where I come from, we don’t exactly have DOG races,” Marro said in her deep, beautiful voice. “Ah, so where ya from, Chickadee?” “The Big Apple,” “That’s pretty far away. That brings ya to this little town Baby?” “I’m escaping a dog catcher. And I needed a change of scenery,” Marro said casually. “So I see. Well, welcome to this little town. Nice sausages. Ya snag em from the old man?” “No, well, he gave em to me,” Marro explained. “Wow. You must have won his favor,” Steele said, watching the meat drag. “Yeah. You wanna split em? You must be hungry after racing,” Marro offered. “Naw thanks. I have business to cover,” Steele murmured. “Oh, puppies, a mate,” Marro said under her breath. “No, just some other things. No mate. Do you have any puppies?” He asked in a much gentler tone. Marro didn’t notice. “No.” “Really? You look like you would have been snatched up pretty quickly.” Marro blushed. “Nope. I’m surprised you haven’t been taken. You look pretty handsome, too. You really seem like the family guy,” she laughed. Steele smiled. “Steele! Get away from her!” Marro and Steele turned around. “Do I know you?” She asked Balto. “Quickly, run. I’ll protect you,” Steele said growling. “Will I ever see you again?” Marro asked. Steele got out of the defensive position he was in and turned to face her. “I’ll see you at Tuscany. 7 sharp. Be there.” Marro nodded and ran off. Behind her she heard a growl, some barks, and one or two voices. She heard a frantic yelp of pain and Steele’s cry. She turned around and ran back. What she saw next really shocked her. “Steele!” she cried.
-Ooc: So, how did you like it? Stay tuned for more! Next time: Marro’s shocking discovery.
Author’s note- This first chapter is dedicated to Wolfhuskey, thank you for encouraging me to pursue this kind of fanfic. I invented Marro long before and her love for Steele and have written many fanfics about their adventures and love, but never how they met. For the Marro fans out there, this is how she met her true love! Love, Steele’s Girl
