To add an avatar, click on the User Control Panel link at the top of the page to enter your profile. In the Options sidebar, select "Profile" (it's the second one from the top). When the profile tab is opened, select "Edit Avatar" (it's the third option). Once you are in the Edit Avatar window, you can upload an image from your computer by hitting the "Browse" button beside the first text box, or you can supply a link to your image in the options that ask you to. Be careful, as there is a limit on how big the image can be (I think it's 150 pixels by 150 pixels).
