All right, I'm working on a new fanfic called The Way We Were. (It's actually the name of a famous musical, I believe.) Anyway, this is a Kodi- and Dusty-themed fic, but what makes this one interesting is that Dusty loses her memory at the height of their relationship. So, to cut to the chase, here's a small portion that will (hopefully :3) grab your interest.
Note: This is written in the first person, meaning that it is told in Dusty's point of view. Quote:
The beach began to fade gently away. As I stared in alarm, the sands under my feet lost their texture and blew away. The ocean dried up, and the sky dissolved. As often happens when one is dreaming, I had lost touch with reality. I thought that I was awake, and that this was all real. Just as I was working myself into real panic, a snowy white figure apparated near me. Instintively, I stiffened, the hairs on my neck rising from my body and chilling me; my panic worked itself into a fervor. Gradually, I realized that it was snowing, and that we were at the bottom of a steep cliff. Suddenly I was grateful that I had not gotten wet in the ocean. I was afraid of the figure; I coud not tell what it was in all this snow...
The creature howled, and in spite of myself I was instantly comforted, though I knew not why. Perhaps because it was a fellow canine, though one that could have easily devoured me. Either way, I was shocked when a warm, mellow voice poured from the wolf's throat like warm, filling broth.
"My daughter, you are distraught." The voice was mellifluous, intoned with understanding and empathy. It was wise to an extent that I had never heard tell of before. It was a voice to be trusted on all accounts.
"I...guess you could say that." When the wolf did not respond, I whispered, "I've lost my identity. I don't fully know who I am. There's a dog I know...I need to know his name. Can you tell me why?" Somehow, I sensed that this creature knew the answers to my questions. As the wolf did not respond, I thought further. I'll bet she knows what the dog's name is. I opened my muzzle to state this thought to the wolf.
"My daughter, I cannot tell you the name of your lover, nor will you find it if you look. Love is the force that will set you free. Use it."
"But -" I stuttered my most burning question. "Why can't I ask anybody what his name is? Why couldn't I hear it at the beach?" I realized in that moment that I'd been prevented from hearing the name of the pup at the beach supernaturally.
"Love...will...set...you...free." The snow was carrying the wolf aloft; she was running through the snow. It was the most beautiful sight I'd ever had the pleasure to gaze upon. She was as graceful as a wraith, leaping like a hare through the drifts. My eyes filled with tears, and I gazed at her as she disappeared. My key to lost love was leaving me. For somehow, I knew that the main conflict in this mystery was love. I didn't know how, or why, but it was as clear as the sparkling sun on the waves.
