Not only that, but who in their right minds would buy something not even worth their money There's only about three artists on this site who even know how commissioning works, and they're not even that active (and for good reason; business is lousy)

With it being on BS - I doubt ANY person taking comissions will get any for the exact same reason you said. Most people here are either too young or wouldn't want one anyway.
Comissions themselves do work but it's easier and generally better to offer them on sites like deviantART, even though I think making seperate accounts there JUST for comissions is just as pointless as having a section here.
Whilst it's there though it gives whichever artist a slightly better chance.
The reason a lot of people pay for comissions is because most artists who they want a picture from - don't take requests. People generally flood to anyone who says "I'll do you requests!" which is the main reason I stopped taking them, as soon as people know they can get free art they'll post "My charrie please!!! They're a black wolf with white markings THNX!!!" which tells you nothing at all and they usually expect it to be done yesterday. T__T I don't know about anyone else but it takes me hours to sketch, lineart, colour, shade and background a picture.

I agree, I don't really see the need for a commission section on this site. It just doesn't appeal the main demographic of AS - kids & young teenagers, who probably don't even know what a commission IS. I also wouldn't particularly agree that "at least it gets the name/business out there". It's true to an extent, but like I said, it's not like it's going to really be reaching serious customers here. I voted "not really". I say, leave the art-business stuff to dA and the like. Considering the nature of AS, there's too few interested buyers (read: approximately none) and hardly any worthy sellers. And kids don't want to spend their money on some stranger over the internet to draw them a picture of their Balto-wolf-husky-dog, when they can get a dozen people here do to it for free, and even if they did, most of them likely have no means of doing so ...it's a bit off-topic, but this is making me wish all the more that I had a PayPal account that was linked to my bank account, cause I hate sending cash through the mail... s'lame :< But lmao I know just about nothing about how to go abount linking the two.

I'm Sorry but... Who would want to start a Business during these times? This is WORST time to start up a business because we're in a Global Economic (Thank you America ). And I know I keep bringing this up - But unfortunately, it's all around us... And opening a Comissions section on kid/teen site is WRONG.

Er, well by art "business" I don't mean an actual business company, Conay... unless one happens to be a professional artist, usually commissions and the like are just for a little extra income, or to have pocket money. And you'd be surprised how well a good artist does getting customers, regardless of the economy. Huskie, WildSpiritWolf, Goldenwolf, Kyoht, etc., and that's just glancing at the "furry" community. I don't think the economy has much to do with it, in short. Plenty of people will still spend any extra money they may have on unnecessary things, including, say, video games, movies, art.. ~~ I'm just saying, a commissions section really has no place on a site like this. Maybe people might advertise them on their profiles or something, but those people would really be too few and far between to devote a whole section of the forum to it. I don't think it's so "WRONG" morally speaking, if that's what you mean, as nobody intends to scam or take advantage of anyone... if you mean it's "WRONG" to make kids/teens pay someone for a piece of art, well, a) that's they're choice if they want to or not, b) they should know what they're getting into when they agree to a commission (as in real money is being dealt with) and c) mama's gotta bring home the cheddar I'm a teen, I've done & received commissions.

Starting any type of Business, even if it is just some artwork is bad, we need to cut back on things like this - If we are to get through this, it's just stupid trying to get little peaces of artwork, as they say "Every Penny Counts".

True enough, but some people just don't mind treating themselves to something indulgent now and then. It's not a bad thing, as long as you can still find a way to get by, financially. I myself still get money to spare now and then.
And if no new jobs/businesses were allowed to develop, how would people who ARE struggling with money ever get an income? :/ Keep leeching off government welfare programs, I suppose? Put the nation into more debt by doing nothing instead of at least making an effort to support themselves, pull their weight & contribute something?
This recession we're in is making people lose jobs - not a good thing. Telling people they shouldn't be allowed to sell something (like art) or do *something* to earn a bit of money in such hard times - also not good. It's an individual's own choice if they want to splurge on something like commissions. If they can afford that, great. If they can't, why can't they at least attempt to get on their feet (for example, by offering commissions, something I know several artists do when they hit rough times)?

Well, say you started a Business and put in ALL the money you have... Then suddenly *BUST* Administrators have walked into your Business, something which would tell people not to start Business's at this current time is the recent falls of Woolworths, MFI and some other major brands.

Woolworths were in millions of pounds worth of debt already before our current financial issues began, they just made it worse for them. MFI has also been struggling for a long time, notice just how many ads they'd been showing on TV with LOADS of sales and offers desperately trying to get customers.
That aside, I doubt anyone on BS is a professional artist (yet anyway) and no one charges huge amounts of money. I highly doubt anyone on BS will be in a position to buy comissions, save for a few. (I know as I've had a comission from someone on BS though that was done on dA before the comissions section was made).
I don't see why it's such a huge deal for people to offer their work as a bit of extra money. Times are hard on everyone at the moment financially but as Kiche has already pointed out - some people still find some spare money that they'll usually spend on something for themselves and often that's a piece of artwork. A friend of mine infact who's also struggling at the moment has found she's got a bit of spare money and she's asked me to paint a mural on a wall of her house and in return she'll pay me for it.
I know for certain that there have been times I would have literally been screwed had it not been for a comission someone asked from me.

I don't think the commissions section is such a bad idea. I'd be interested in purchasing art (even though I'm only 12) but well... the Australian dollar is like almost half the value of the US dollar now, so well, that's not very good. I'd be spending about $35 on something worth $20.
The global economy crisis has nothing to do with commissions, if you ask me. It's not like it's a big business where people are hiring artists and getting calls from people and buying truckloads of supplies... it's just a few brushes, pens, pencils, canvases and sketch pads from the local art store. The crisis didn't really hit Australia that bad, anyway. But most of you are from USA or UK.
Anyway, the commissions section is okay, I think. While no-one has purchased any yet and this is a kid-friendly site, I think a lot of you forget there aare mostly teens on this site, and that the average 14-16 year old has more money than you think.

I said that I don't care because well...I don't. I personally wouldn't pay somebody to make a drawing for me and even if I could I'm one of those people that doesn't have a pay pal account or credit card so I wouldn't be able to do it anyway. My thoughts, well, there are many taleted artist, and their really good, but not many people can afford(let alone buy food) to buy art work. I myself- Can not afford to go to a docter or a dentist, why waste money (Not saying people can't draw) for art work when I can find out why I've been falling asleep so much? (Five naps today, each consiting of a hour or so, a new record for me) This site is easily found- I've found my profile when searching for Kohaku Fanfiction, it gave me a link back to My Balto/The Lion King source profile, so when many kids (Young, 12 or below I am guessing could be the most average age of the New-bies) And like UK teh white wolfer had said, Request are easily taken. Free art, or buying it? I would go for free art. I don't usally take FanImage request, so I wouldn't know how badly people flock to it. The younger kids usally ask for free art, so the People who do Commisons, can't take request from them. No, commision's aren't really a good thing in my opoin- I mean Don't you have to give out your adress to recive the art work? (Kinda Akward if you ask me)Balto source isn't a profession Art site, DA is I think. And besides- You don't know if you like the art work or if it's pathetic untill you pay and buy it, how would you know if you'd been cheated? whitewolf17 wrote: I said that I don't care because well...I don't.
