Steele was afraid that if Balto broung the medicine to town that Jenna would fall in love with Balto. Steele really wanted Jenna to be his.

Yeah, basically. The bottom line is that Steele is a jerk. Part of it had to do with Jenna, and part of it had to do with Steele's own sense of self-importance. Steele didn't like Balto to begin with, because he was part wolf and because Jenna seemed to like him instead of Steele.

Steele's pride had already been hurt badly enough when he got his own team lost and trapped at the bottom of a hill in the mountains, but then who of all people showed up to save them?

Yeah, Balto. It made Steele snap, it was too much for him. There was no way his giant ego would allow himself to be saved by Balto, so he did whatever he could to prevent it, to the point of trying to stop Balto from getting home with the medicine, and then lying about it later to the other dogs.

It's because Steele can't handle failure. He always has to be the best at everything. Even when he made mistakes, he would just bully the other dogs into ignoring it. Lucky for Nome, Balto didn't give in to bullying, huh? :)

what i dont get is how steele made it back to town before balto... that would mean he knew where he was going and that way he could have gotten the medicine there in time... well, faster at least

true Red-Fox i think that steele didn't want to get back with the med. because he's careless.

Yeah, Steele did get back to town before Balto. The problem was, he had fallen down that cliff after fighting with Balto - he couldn't have gotten the medicine back to town at that point even if he wanted to. They didn't explain how Steele got to Balto's marked trees before Balto did, but, you can just assume it was because Balto was pulling a sled and Steele wasn't. So Steele could there faster.

The thing is, Steele didn't care about the medicine, or the children of Nome. That's what makes him a jerk. In fact if you remember, before Steele and his team left, Jenna had to remind him about the kids, and to stop being such a glory hound. Steele never cared about the medicine or the kids, the only thing he cared about was looking like a hero.

So because that was the only thing he cared about, that's why he went through the trouble of trying to get Balto lost in the mountains while returning to Nome himself and telling a story that made it sound like Balto was never going to return. He didn't think Balto would return, so his story would be safe because nobody would be able to prove it wrong, and he would still look like a hero even without bringing the medicine back.

All in all, I'd say the same thing that must have been "up with" Hitler when two black men won gold medals in the Olympics. Steele had certain pre-set notions about who was genetically superior or inferior, and he couldn't endure the prospect of those prejudices being disporven.
And as pointed out, the fact that Jenna obviously prefered Balto over him didn't help much. If Balto managed to prove himself on this, not to mention if Balto and the team got back to town and told how Steele had botched things and then refused to aceept help, goodbye any chance of Jenna going for Steele (as if there was a chance).

Steele's ego and pride were too big to accept that a wolf-dog could do better than him, so he tried to proove his superiority in any possible way. The other reason is that he knew that Jenna wanted to save Rosy.

That last part doesn't quite fit, because if he had been really trying to please Jenna he would have tried to save Rosie somehow. Of course, since his interests were self-focused, that made it easy for him to write Rosie, or any of the kids for that matter, off his list of concerns.

Very true. That being said, it really didn't make sense for Steele to expect Jenna to love him when he obviously didn't care one whit about Rosie, whom Jenna loved very much. But hey, if villains were smart they'd actually win sometimes, right? :)

Oh, some villains can be very smart. In the Redwall books, for example, Cluny was a very sharp tactician. In the end, he lost to Matthias not because Matthias was a better fighter, but because the mouse was fighitng for the right (and having a legendary sword probably helped, even if it wasn't magic or anything like that).

Well i can see that Dragon Tamer but Steele wasn't a good dog because of the way he treated other dogs.
