I've seen several tutorials on how to use Photoshop, ranging from basic guides to complex ones. But there's none (that I know of) on the free program called GIMP. I thought that since it's relatively well-known, it would have a tutorial of its own, but meh.


Anyways, anybody know how to work this thing? *clicks a bunch of stuff and computer freezes* Gah! It's so confusing! Some help, please? (Just basic how-to-use stuff)


*Also, I'm especially looking for advice on how to use the different "layers". The whole concept seems pretty spiffy, but I have NO IDEA how to use it and would really appreciate it if somebody would give me some pointers. *

I don't use GIMP, I tried once at college but was totally confused and so I can't give any pointers. XD

Oh,I know how to use GIMP! I use it all the time. If you wanna create a new layer,just click edit,then copy on one,then paste it on the other! If you need other help using GIMP,check the Help menu,and see the tutorials. Also,if you don't see the Layers,Channels and Paths menu,then go to the Windows menu,and select recently closed docks. Then click the menu(if it's there) and it's all set! I know more,but if you REALLY want to know more from me just PM.

Well, I hate gimp to its liveing death. (its just a weird an confuseing pogram.) That's why I use photoshop.

Mighty Balto--Photoshop and GIMP are the same thing,except a little different. And Photshop is awesome,but I gotta use the GIMP. Besides,GIMP is a free download.

Well, I recently downloaded GIMP and I think it's PWNSOME.

Here's just an example of something I made using simple GIMP tools:

You'll find that the most useful tools to use are the DODGE and BURN tools. I love them.

There are lots of helpful tutorials for how to do whatever in GIMP, and most of the Photoshop tutorials are able to use in GIMP.

Layers are handy-schmandy. Doing everything on a diferent layer helps, and you can always combine them if your are sick of having 40 billion layers.

Thanks Vivid! Everybody's stuff has helped, and now you've made me want to do a nighttime scene with the ocean...so don't be surprised if I actually do it! I'll give you credit for the idea. ^^

You don't need to credit me XD It's not like I invented the ocean at night. But you can credit me if you like. By the way, incase you're interested, there is a very handy cloud tutorial on DA. It's proven very useful.
