I was browsing the newest fan news, which lists songs the writer thought might go well with characters from Balto. I saw that some were marked as "explicit," and decided to find out why (spare me the mini-mod remarks, please). I was absolutely appalled by the lyrics of one song, titled "I'm not your boyfriend, baby." While, admittedly, there did seem to be some positive idea in the song, the language and terms were deplorable for posting, letalone so prominently, on a kids' website. What do the rules say, people? Rule #1: No swearing. Admittedly, the fan news itself contained no swear words. But how does it fit that this site advertises a song with blaring sexual themes and obscene language to match?
I would be most appreciative if said song were removed from the fan news. We shouldn't be promoting such music.

Well, gee, DT, didn't you comment on a certain interview with Mr. Weinstein? I seem to recall a minute+ long conversation on the song "Shut your f-ing Face, Uncle F-er" from the show South Park (which is a rather explicit show) and you didn't seem to have a problem with the fact that there was no warning for any explicit language or discussion for that or any other audio posted by the same people.

I'm not pointing fingers, but if you didn't have a problem with that don't you think that it's a little odd to throw a tiff about songs with swearing that have a POSITIVE message to them? Besides, I don't think the mods would've let DrewTheWolf post those songs if they thought people (plural) were going to have a serious problem with them. Besides, nothing was more heavily rated than anything in fanfics here AND almost every song played has been played on the radio at some point in the US. XD

And shifting gears for a second? iTunes says that The Adventure by Angels and Airwaves was explicit. I fail to see how XD

I never saw the interview of which you speak. I just find it troubling to see a song like that promoted here, and I am excercising my right as a member to express my concerns. As for the "positive message," let me be more specific: I saw one line which had an overall idea I could reasonably support, and even that line said what it said in a way that was decidedly not kid-friendly.

So one song makes everything terrible? XD Fine for removing one song, but if you want something done about all of the explicit stuff, maybe you should give more urgent examples. The one song you did use for an example; The same words have been used in audio and fanfics used on this site. Now, I'm not promoting open use of the f-word or anything on the site, but either complain about all of it, or none of it XD (or just file a complaint to steet or a mod. Making an entire topic on one song is a little over dramatic)

As for the rest of the explicit songs? The worst I heard was from Anna's songs "Hot N Cold" by Katy Perry, "...like a b***h. I should know" which is funny cuz, lol, she's a female dog. (Again, that song's been used on the radio, uncensored)

And pardon me on the topic. I only assumed you listened to said audio because you commented on it in the forum topic.

Dude, even if he song wasn't "kid-friendly" as you said, a warning what placed along with the song, a song can't do any harm, when I was little I would sing the song "Wasn't me" (which is very explicit) and I'm a functional member in society, songs doesn't affect anyone.

Placing warnings on such contents is a good thing, the warning is clear too, it's the members responsability to click on the link or not, they were warned.

cat --> I admit to having only checked the lyrics of the first marked song that I saw, hoping that any investigation I triggered might pick up whatever I missed. I'm at college, and between that and a tricky connection I can't generally take a dependable internet connection for granted, if you see what I mean. As for the interview, I'll pardon you if you'll pardon me; I had the impression it was a video, which we can't watch online where I am. My comment, accordingly, was out of mere interest rather than actual feedback.

Kepru --> Have you forgotten we have eight-year-olds on this site? It's not enough to label something as off-limits, that only draws them in like a magnet. When you're dealing with kids, you have to at least put some things on the top shelf.

It was only 4 years ago that I was eight. And this would've be my reaction if I heard that song.
"Oooh, he said the F word, how naughty!!!!" That's it. Most kids' parents and older siblings swear anyway. I think a warning is enough on the songs there. Besides, when I was eight I was on the internet a lot and had no interest looking at songs on youtube. In fact, in songs like that, I couldn't even understand most of the words.

In other words, you were desensitized. That doesn't change the matter much.

I know this is the rant board and all but ya are fighting a losing battle here DT. The whole "this is a site with little kids" thing has been debated to death already so I hope ya have more than just that card to play or else your rant will be kinda meaningless. Also, we can't just start censoring something because it has a bad word or two in it. People that are too young should know not to look at it and on the internet ya just have to trust in them because ya can't do too much else.

I think ya are trying to make a mountain out of a molehill here.

I might actually agree with you if not for three things.
1. Kids generally don't know better, especially in this day and age. I should know, I had the same problem when I was that age.
2. We have rules about swearing. Granted, the site had no swearing in and of itself, but it's the principle of it.
3. I have it on good authority that parents have voiced concern over other things which cropped up on the site. Since they largely determine whether or not their kids have access here, shouldn't we take them into account?

Believe me, I wouldn't make a fuss if I didn't sincerely think this needed to be addressed. What with classes and schoolwork, I'm fairly busy. And getting into this kind of discussion, contrary to popular belief, is not something I do for fun.

I have another point I forgot to say:

It's the internet!! And no matter where ya go, there will always be something not intended for small kids. And also, most songs nowadays tend to have a bad word or two in them so unless we only allow really old music and the like there won't be much to choose from.

I wouldn't be making such a fuss if it were just the odd curse, but there were, as I said in the first post, blatant sexual remarks as well.
Yes, I know that it's the internet. And anyone who really wants to find garbage can find it. But why make it easy, and why put stuff in the path of those who aren't looking for it?

That argument is invalid. It's not like the music automatically plays and it is still labeled as explicit. We are not putting it in anybody's path. People who don't want to click on it, don't! And I know that kids are very curious when it comes to things that they are not allowed to look at, but like they say, curiosity killed the cat. There is nothing wrong with that song being there, so long as it remains appropriately labeled.

I think you have a misconception here.

Posting a warning before aforementioned material does not permit the poster the right to post it up anyways.

To think otherwise is a silly illusion fostered by the indecisive(or no) action against similar material that goes untouched. Either by it not being brought to the attention of those in charge, or by dereliction of duty by those in charge.

Thank you, GU. Vivid, that's like saying that if parents keep a loaded gun in the house with a "Do not touch" sign on it, they're totally blameless if a kid plays around with the gun and someone gets hurt. Granted, that comes across as a bit drastic, but nowhere near as much as one might think.
