This particular genre has been relatively popular especially within the last few years. Series like Harry Potter, The Inheritance Cycle, His Dark Materials and Twilight have given young readers the opportunity to broaden their horizons with literature. Some series have been rather controversal like Harry Potter or His Dark Materials. Others have been embraced by millions of young readers like Twilight. Well I propose this question out of the many series and individual books which do you think will come to dominate the fantasy market?
My opinion on this matter is that maybe either Harry Potter and His Dark Materials are contenders for this role. Not that The Inheritance Cycle (Eragon,Eldest,Brisingr, Unknown Book Four) and Twilight (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn) might be runner up series for this role. I will use Twilight as an example as to why it might be a runner up series. With the release of a movie which made millions of dollars around the world it shows there is enough interest in this story to keep it going for along time. However this new found popularity might also be short lived. While the story is clearly creative the vampire genre has been used many times over. None of the vampire stories that have been written have had more an impact than Bram Stoker's Dracula. This particular book will be hard to knock off it's pedestal since it has been there for more than a hundred years.
As for the two contenders it is hard to say since both of them have such a strong original theme and a in depth fantasy world. But I would have to side with His Dark Materials. My reasons for this are. The series author Philip Pullman has this series not take place in our world but a parallel world in which he can shape it however he wants. Usage of clever literary devices like daemons, alethiometers, mulefa's shows that he has an increditable imagination for things that normally don't exist. His confrontation of authority specifically religious authority shows that he isn't afraid to trend on ground most others would dare not. It will be difficult to make his series far more popular than JRR Tolkiens The Lord of the Rings series which has dominated the fantasy genre for well over thirty years. But who knows what the future has in store.
