I'm going to put up a tutorial on this very thing sometime after Christmas! But for now, here are some tips:
- It's good that you're starting with a circle for the head. If you've already drawn the body (though I recommend doing the head first), make sure that the circle is in proportion with the rest. Otherwise, the whole thing will end up looking wonked out.
- After you've done the circle, I would do the muzzle next. Just try drawing a straight line out from the circle. (This will be the top of the muzzle.) If you need to, step back and make sure that it's not too long or too short. Like the circle, the length of the line is crucial to the rest of the head.
- It's hard for me to describe ears very well; I'd do better to just draw them (which I will do in my tutorial). So for now, I'd say that the best thing to do is to experiment with ear lengths. Don't be afraid of the eraser, and try to step back from your pic or take a short break every once in a while. Also, it's easier to start out with ears pointed up instead of to the side or backwards.
Hope this helps somewhat; I know it's not much, but these are the things I used when I was trying to improve my technique also.
