Hello Balto sourcers!
Due to recent events, my grandad has had a stroke, and is in a hospital called "Darrent Valley Hospital" in Dartford, Kent (UK). And his TV service is run by Hospedia (Well, so is the entire hospitals), and we have to pay £10 for 5 days worth of 15 channels, and they are:
BBC1
BBC2
ITV1
CHANNEL 4
CHANNEL 5
BBC NEWS
SKY NEWS
SKY SPORTS NEWS
CEEBEBIES(sp?)
CBBC
BBC3
BBC4
PROMO TV (Not sure what that is...)
DAVE
And SETANTA SPORTS 1 (However this is seprate, it's £5 for 24 hours)

Which in my eye is dis-graceful. Because, with sky, for 40 channels you would pay £16 with telephone and broadband (8mb) included. It's not just that, the radio stations host ONLY:
HOSPITAL RADIO
(BBC) RADIO 1
BBC RADIO 2
BBC RADIO 3
BBC RADIO 4
LOCAL RADIO
Which for anyone would be dis-graceful. And yet, they charge high prices for them.

Whats your opinions?

1.00 GBP = 1.55171 USD

(Basicly $1.55)

I really don't think it's a 'disgrace'. They have to make money, too. It's just how things work. If you don't like it, don't pay for it. Simple as that.

I feel it is, you say they need to make money, how come other business's can host thousands of channels, at the same price that they charge for 15.

It's different than paying for home cable or satellite TV, Conay. The hospitals do reimburse what little they actually do make (once the ***** insurance companies get their slice of the pie) on such services. And since patients are there as guests, rather than residents, the charge covers various costs involved with entertainment. Entertainment in a hospital room is not a right, it is a pay-by service. There is no law requiring them to provide television, much less at a certain price.

It's quite the same here in the U.S. and, I suspect, in most countries. I don't see a problem with it at all. And I have had a few hospital stays in the past. And yes, either I paid or, when I was young, my parents did.

Meh, your views, my views - When I broke my leg. I went intol hospital, I lasted two days with no TV, and no internet - And I was going crazy!

It is possible to last two whole days without the internet, Conay. Even television. Though being confined to a hospital bed with no distractions, beyond an occasional nurse visit and a roommate, could be tough on the sanity. Ever thought of cracking a book or a magazine. It's healthy.

Problem is, I couldn't get out of my bed, and the closest I got to a book was in the shop.

I don't mean to belabor this...and I am certainly not trying to argue with you, but that is what visitors are for. And visiting hours. And, among other things, those visitors can bring you things like cards (or other games), as well as any magazines or books you want. Or crossword puzzles. Jeez...

I did ask for a few things. A book, actually during my 4 night stay, I had asked for 4 books, since two of them they never had (When they said they had). And the third never got to me... So I was faced with Hospedia

I don't think it's too bad really. Considering how most hospitals in the UK are NHS ones, unless you actually search for a private hospital, there's really a fair selection for the price and if you're in hospital the focus is to get better. Like JC said, there's plenty of other things to do to pass the time and you can have visitors to chat with or if people on your ward are friendly enough and feeling well enough you can always try and chat with them.

I had to stay in hospital for a night and the better part of a day and while I managed to get TV for the day I soon got bored of it. It was more fun to chat with my mum and brother and mess about reading a daft magazine my mum bought me. (The magazine was meant as a joke btw).

I am very highly inclined to agree with JerseyCaptain here. One doesn't need television or the internet while in the hospital. Sure, I can imagine that it would become a little 'bothersome' to say the least, but the television and internet are not vital parts of human nature ; despite what many think now-a-days. (And people wonder why more and more of the world's youth tend to be so gosh-darned fat...)

Instead of paying for something that you deem to 'expensive', forget about it. Read a book, magazine. Play those hand-held games. Bring a Nintendo DS if you have one. I don't know. But you don't need the television. Expecially if, in your oppinion, it is too expensive to pay. Then again, most of the younger people will probably think it too expensive because many don't have jobs or don't know the value of money. But whatever. That's besides the point.

I know we should read a book, or use our PSP's exc. (Unfortunately, I have non of these portable game things). And to make things worse, my mum can only come for like one hour... But as for the other people there... our ward was empty, and there was only one other.. And he was so annoying...
