There are a few ways to make line art.

Are you looking to make it traditionally (by hand), or digitally (on the computer)? Or do you want to know how to make line art "Microsoft Paint Friendly," too?

All right. I know how to make Paint-friendly line art with Photoshop, but not with GIMP. Some people use non-Paint friendly line art in photoshop, though, too.

1.) After you've drawn your picture [in pencil], you'll need to have some sort of "inking device." This will save time in any/all computer programs of manually inking. I suggest using a Liquid ink pen, which is what I use all the time. You can also use markers, but they tend to bleed and/or the lines will "buldge," making the line art thicker than you intended.

Using your inking pen, go over the lines of the drawing that you want to keep. Leave the rest in pencil. Be sure to allow a couple of minutes for the ink to dry, though it shouldn't take too long (depending on your pen). I DO NOT SUGGEST USING GEL PENS, for when you erase they tend to smudge a lot, rendering your line art unusable. Once you've done this, you can take a block eraser (the erasers on the ends of pencils wear down easily -- save those for school!) and erase all of the pencil marks. And you have nice line art!

PHOTOSHOP TO MICROSOFT PAINT FRIENDLY

First, you need to open your line art in Photoshop. Follow the path as so:

Image >> Threshold. A screen will pop up, and you can play with the image's properties until you like it. This makes it "Paint friendly," but you will have to go into Paint to ensure it works (a "test"), as well as to clean it up a little. This doesn't take long, and should be easy. :]
