Seven thousand years... Seven thousand years and here he was, sitting on a branch looking at a human town.
Za'an snorted to himself, staring down from the tree he was perched in to watch the little town nestled in the shallow valley.
It was a calm, quiet, night, lit by two of the earth's three moons which provided more then enough light for a vampire such as Za'an to see by, illuminating the town and many of the trees that surrounded it. He knew better then to rely on sight alone, though, and closed his golden eyes, listening intently to his surroundings.
At first the only sound he heard was the gargle of the river that wound it's wa through the valley, but as he listened longer more noises came to his awareness. For a few minutes, he listened to the shuffling of insects under the bark of his tree then moved his concentration else where.
For the longest time he stayed motionless, only moving again when he was quite sure the rusling sound beneath him was the result of the wind, and then opened his eyes to gaze around.
A shiver ran down his spine as the cool night wind shifted, batterign his face. It made him sneeze loudly, bringing with it the mixed scents of humans, animals, and the strong-smelling flowers humans found so attractive. He snorted. 'What is their obsession with them anyway?' he thought to himself as he wrinkled his nose against the smell, holding one of his slives to his nose to ward of the odor as he grunted out an impatient breath.
"Come on..." The words dropped almsot silently from his lips and he hardly heard them himself, and he shifted his weight as much as he dared, only to gasp and freeze as the branch he was perched on groaned in protest.
The pale-skinned man waited until the air was quiet again and released a breath he just realized he'd been holding, letting his strong shoulders untense and leaning his head back slightly, popping his neck. 'Calm down,' he told himself, 'It's not like they're coming anyway.'
A span of time ensued this little thought, during which Za'an didn't pay attention to much but the sounds of the forest, then he heard the welcome sound of an owl's hoot and his eyes were dragged across the valley to the trees opposite himself, the golden irises glowing in anticipation.
He only had to wait a moment or so, then a dark blue flame flickered into life, illuminating what looked liek the form of a man neslted into the branches of the tree in the moment before the flame died again.
'Yes! Finally!' Za'an though, exhaling as he stood only to gasp again, this time as his tense muscles stretched painfully. He made a face at the unpleasent sensation and devoted a few moments of his time to, whimpering, stretch out his sore arms and legs before leaping to a tree to his left, moving swiftly but not so silently through the leaves and branches until he found himself face to face with a female vampire sitting on a high branch. He grabbed a particularly thick branch, bringing himself to a sudden halt, and flipped over so he was ontop of the branch, facing the other vampire.
"Any sign of those dogs?" the female asked.
"You really have to ask?" Za'an snorted. "Please. I doubt they're be in much of a hurry to come back after the beating we-" He suddenly trailed off, leaving his sentance unfinished as his hyper sensative ears picked up some sort of howl.
"Zay, hun?" the female asked, noticing the distant look in his face, "Are you okay?"
"Didn't you hear that?"
"Hear-?"
Za'an quickly cut off her question with the finger he raised to his lips. That time they both heard it.
'It' was the high-pitched scream of a human. A female human, judging by the way it pierced Za'an's skull and sent his brain throbbing.
"Where'd it come fr-?" The female didn't finish the question because Za'an cut her short with the answer.
"The farm. Go get Vagabond and Lisa. I'm going to see if there's anything I can't do about it."
