The line between metal and other genres become more and blurred as time goes on, however specific sub-genres have further definition and division from other general genres and heavy-metal sub-genres alike.
Lately it's become like splitting hairs with the inclusion of new "waves" of metal like metalcore and deathcore, etc.
For referencing for sub-genres see:
Pain of Salvation/Dream Theater/Symphony X: Progressive Metal
Opeth/Insomnium/Morbid Angel/Deicide: Death Metal
Slayer/Nevermore/Megadeth/Pantera/(early) Metallica: Thrash Metal
Emperor/Borknagar/(early) Arcturus: Black Metal
Helloween/Sonata Arctica/Blind Guardian: Power Metal
Agalloch/Paradise Lost/(early) Katatonia: Doom Metal
ISIS/Cult of Luna/Pelican/Neurosis: Post-metal/Sludge
Between The Buried and Me/Mastodon: Metalcore, and the only permissable metalcore bands at that.
And finally the kick-off:
Judas Priest/Iron Maiden/Black Sabbath/Saxon/Motorhead: NWOBHM/Heavy Metal
Not a definitive list, but a glimpse into the different sub-genres within metal and different styles within those sub-genres.
Also, sub-genres.

There is a distinct possibility that it is a cross-over like Blackened Death Metal.
A few differences are:
Rather than a deep guttural Roar or growl, black metal vocals feature a more highly pitched and screeched vocal.
The distortion used on black metal guitars is usually much rawer and tingy and lacks the chunkiness of a down-tuned death metal guitar sound.
Black metal and Death metal share blast beats, however both are played in different styles to each or implemented in different ways (gravity blasts, etc.)
