I'm with Zucat, she pretty much said it XP

Seriously people, the fan characters section is FILLED with stinky, low-quality renders! If you care about your character that much, then PLEASE do it a favor and do a decent pic of it!!

*sighs* There, got that off my chest.

I have to admit that there are TONS of characters in that section that are rendered badly and were just created for the sake of having a character...I means geez, I have ONE character there and that's because I only HAVE one character that actually has enough background and detail to be put there. Honestly, what's the point of putting up crappy half-butt characters up that don't even have backgrounds?

I mean common people, have one of two. Good quality renders~drawings (meaning it SHOWS that effort was put into it, not necessarily skilled) or at least an interested background...I'm asking for one of the above, ain't that hard.

In regards to this if we're all here to say how bad these "bad" renders are and how quickly someone did them on MS paint then how can we have a go at them without doing the same to those who draw their characters free-hand on MS and have the same quality? Yes we can argue that there is some creativity in drawing something yourself but what is the different between rushing a picture so that it doesn't look at all good and rushing a render with both achieving the same result?

And its not just screenshot. I've seen several artits pictures get drawn over and rendered to their own characters. Now I see a bunch of members using several of Kay Fedewa's pictures. Its both theft and rude. Artists just don't make pictures to get stolen and rendered over. Have some respect for the pics. Its not getting you anywhere. You're just being a copycat and trying to get credit off of other's people work.

As long as they say that the work isn't their own and credit the real drawer than it's alright, however if they don't give credit and it can easy be seen to be a copy of another artists work than I think it should be deleted ASAP.

Lately the fan characters area is filled with too many bad renders and its annoying. Draw out your own picutre if you want to make it official. Geez

I agree, but who are we to say they can't do this? It is they who decided to put that picture up for the world to see and them alone, if they like it then let it be, if it annoys people so much than the solution is easy don't look at them or click into their character profile. What really worries me in the fan character section is the fact that most characters just have a picture and no information at all, this is more of a problem I believe, and on a side note, most of the bad rendered character pages are indeed those that have no character information.

I actually really hate renders. To me there's no point in them, people argue that people who can't draw so well use them to show their characters properly but that's what free lineart is for and for the most part lineart is just as easy to colour as rendering an image is.

I also agree that the fan characters section is becoming a joke. Over half of the characters there are either renders of screencaps or renders of other artists pictures with Kay Fedewa's being the most popular to be ripped off.

One thing I do have to say though:
What is the difference between screencaps and other artwork that makes it ok to colour over screencaps but art theft to colour over a picture done by another artist?
People always say "These people didn't spend their time and hard work making a picture to be ripped off!" but the same goes for screencaps. They didn't magically appear as a movie, someone drew them and put their time and hard work into drawing them but it's not art theft to colour those? Just because they were in a movie?

The darker side of things...

I agree with just about everyone here. I HATE RENDERS!!! They are really one of the most irritating and irksome things on Balto Source. Apart from that the site in my opinion is pretty much perfect. But I see piles and piles of clone scenes over and over again and it makes me fume. pissedoff.gif For example, take the scene where Balto and Jenna touch noses. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I SEEN THIS USED FOR ANOTHER RANDOM FAN COUPLE?? about a billion. As if every single fan couple on Balto source actually run into eacother and touch noses, and actually happens to look exactly like Balto and Jenna, by chance? Please. Save yourself some respect. This is just one of the many scenes that are over-used as a quick and easy way to illustrate your characters for just about anything you want. IF YOU REALLY LOVED YOUR CHARACTERS, YOU WOULD SPEND TIME DRAWING THEM YOURSELF! Originality is a thing to be proud of. 8)

Onto the lighter side of things, because on the whole, I am quite a tolerant person :D Some renders ARE creative. They use light, shading and neat presentation to make the characters actually look original, and I admire these people for not opting for the easy way out. But then again, we have to accept the fact that not everyone is born a talented artist, :alien: but they could still make the effort, and in time they WILL imrpove.

Why can some people not see this?

I agree 100% I see alot of horrible renders. Is there a tutorial on how to make good renders? It would help if there was.

Yes, it would help if there was a tutorial. I don't like bad renders either, but, for some of them, thats the best they can do! Some aren't the best artists, so they post a rendered character. Yeah, it may not be great, but that may be the best they can do! You can't get made at someone for tring there best.

Whilst I think that some older members should be putting in an effort when rendering, you need to bear in mind that this is a site for all ages, and the younger members might not know how to render "properly". Also, not everyone owns a tablet, so it can be har to get the lines perfect. I personally know how hard it can be to produce good renders with decent lines and colouring when drawing by mouse. So I know how hard it must be for some members.

What else are certain members supposed to use? Not everyone owns a fancy programme, such as Photoshop, and some people are reluctant to download free programmes off the internet as it's not 100% safe.

Not everyone is great at rendering, and some people are just beginners, as long as they're trying their best and having fun then it shouldn't really matter...

And about the Fan Characters thing, some some people find it a lot easier to render than to draw free hand. They can't help it if they aren't as good as the popular Artist on here, and some members have an interest in Photo Manipulation, so if they enjoy rendering why not leave them be?..

But, that's just my honest opinion.

Yes, Kirada has made one. But like I said it can still be hard for non-tablet owners to go round the lines perfectly. So a guide won't be the perfect solution.

i completely agree with everything but some people aren't the best at rendering e.g me but we try. i admit i should try to shade my pics but it always turns out wrong thats why i don't. a lot of people get pleasure out of rendering even though they may not be the best.in the rules it says nothing against non-shaded renders or going over the touching noses moment.

but on the other hand it does ruin the moment in the balto film if people go over it these things don't happen to every dog/wolf.

The thing is, I'm not fully referring to the lack of quality. I'm more talking about the lack of creativity. I'm sure you tried to at least draw you character right?

yes you have a point there is a huge lack of creativity.
