Okayy, simple topic. Basically, a topic about language in general. Whether you know more than one, if you're learning about one, what you know, what you'd like to know. Let's start with something simple.
Me. My mother speaks spanish fluently (woo hooo she never taught me) However, i took spanish in school so...i guess that's okay. I am quite literate in spanish, can read and write it, but it's hard for me to speak it (i think too much). I do sound native though, guess it's because my mother's spanish =] As of right now, i'm trying to teach myself japanese.
Japanese is an interesting yet complicated language. There are three different writing systems, and, if you want to learn it, you'd have to be very dedicated to learning it.
So, what languages do you know? Or, what are you learning?
oh, and, quick question, would anyone like to be a language study partner with me?
Aaand, anything you'd like to share with people? Such as, random things to say in different languages that would be fun to know (nothing vulgar, please)

Well, I'm still learning a bit of French and Italian. I'm hoping to learn other languages, too. ^^
Here's all the langages I'm going to know in the future. (I'll put weither I've learned it yet or not.)
English - Duh, Learned. XD
French - Learning
Italian - Learning
German - Not learned
Spanish - Not learned
---
Now, I also know a little bit of Japanese. ^^ However, I sorta gave up right now. =/ Too challenging.

Oooh very cool O: i think learning spanish as well as italian and french would be good; they're all so extremely similar that (i think) they're easiest to learn together.
German....eh, i never liked the language too much xD my friend's learning it, which is cool i suppose. I want to learn it so i could travel and such, also, for job purposes. :B
go learn japanese >:D

Actually, grammatically and structurally, Japanese is a very EASY language to learn. It's the writing system which is difficult. The kanji, which is basically the Japanese restructuring of the Chinese pictographic system to fit their language and pronunciation better. And then the two "kana" systems: hiragana, used to cover Japanese words the kanji symbols does not, and katakana, used to figure foreign words into the Japanese language. I took several years of French in junior high school and then in high school. And can speak it fairly well (though not fluently). In college, I took about two semesters of Italian (it was only available on a very limited basis at the time), and about a year's worth of Japanese (though I continue to study both Italian and Japanese on my own). Wow. I learned something new today. I'm positive the word grammar is the hardest of the language, hands down! But, doesn't the Japanese spoken language kind of throw you off, too? In Japanese, they say words that are the same thing most of the time, but with different meanings. I could, myself, find it hard to understand. That's why I have most of the words learned, but I can't grasp all the meanings and ways of speaking it. (Like, the words are the same, but you can tell the difference by listening how it's said. Now for me, I have trouble doing that. That's a major hearing problem I have... oh well.)

(didn't read all of it, mostly skimmed)
Yeah, the writing systems are extremely difficult, and of course, me being so smart, decided to learn them first. I don't know too much japanese (i mean, actually speaking it) i'm just trying to get the writing system down.
The only reason i adore hiragana and katakana is that they're all phonetic, so if i ever forget a kanji (which, every body does) i can plug in hiragana and they'll obviously understand it.
What i also find quite bothersome is that (as Sep stated) is that japanese lacks gender, the, and all those other fun things that english/french/spanish etc have. And the word order, of course, it rather confusing for anyone, in my opinion. However, learning a language that is so different--with a completely different alphabet too--is a great challenge, and, since it's so new and fresh, i'm even more interested in learning it. Which, is always a good thing.
Anyway, as for languages in general, i've heard english is rather hard to learn, mostly because there are so many 'exceptions' in the language, and then there's the controversy of spanish and french: which one is easier? I hear these sort of arguments a lot lol.
Personally, i think any language is difficult to learn, and it's especially difficult if you DON'T want to learn it. Although, the experience is incredible. What's even more fun is learning slang in different languages. Gahh, language is an incredible thing >:D

Anyways, I know Italian and English... I don't need anything else, and I don't want to learn any other (I hate to study different languages). That'd be cool. ^^ Thanks. I don't have MSN, so it would probably have to be this topic or pm's.

I know enough Spanish to hold a conversation and understand what fluent speakers are saying.
And I'm learning Japanese. So far, I only know basic Hiragana and I'm trying to get that down before I even think about trying Kanji D:
It's fun to learn. I'll probably be taking it next year too :3
