Balto's last Photo

Image

This photo is Balto near death. It was taken at the Brookside zoo. In the photo, DR W.T Brinker was examining Balto. The man in the hat was Balto's keeper. It's sad to see Balto in pain. I never saw this photo, so I want to share it with you guys.

I see you've been watching Working Dog Web. Very good. While I have personal issues with Lance Jensen, the author of the article from which you got that photo, it is a good find. And - with enough digging, it could also be found elsewhere.

Good work, MB!

Thanks! At first I wasn't sure if it was Balto or not. The Picture is on a weird angle. Also, Balto is sitting funny makeing it look odd.

Keep in mind that, if this photo is what Jensen says it is (given what the Cleveland Museum of Natural History would have told him), then Balto is on his very "last leg" here...and it would have been just before he was put to sleep. So he was old.

I have contacted the staff and librarian of the museum to inquire about getting hold of information, photos, and any records they have, to see if they'd be willing to contribute to their use on my website. We'll see what they say (it's the weekend, though, so it may take some days for them to respond).

I already have a working relationship, now, with the Carrie McLain Museum in Nome. The time I spent there, talking with the staff, resulted in good friendships and some good research lines. They provided me with some really good material, and with the expectation of more yet to come. Of course, then there's sorting through it all, transcribing it to electronic form, and posting it. And that all takes TIIIIME. Something I'm not always terribly good at finding and allotting to myself.

Yes, I Realize that. Anyway, I hope they will contribute this information. :)

Poor Balto. I just want to give him a hug. But one question. Are his ears down and floppy or is it just the lighting in the photo?

No, Balto has strait ears. He probly had them pinned back. I know its hard to see his ears.

As I marked out were I think his ears are. :)
