This is the opening of my story, Lupine. I'm not finished with it yet, but I have most of it planned out. I'm not sure if I'm able to show it on the site since it has nothing to do with balto and it isn't all just about lycans/anthromorphic wolves. It contains a good amount of humans and bloods/vampires as well.
So here's the Prologue. Hope you like it.
Orrick sat at the top of the cliff, spear in hand, keeping his balance. He stared into the far stretched dusty plain that went on for miles. It was night, and darkness fell over the valley. The moon was half full, lighting the floor of the valley, but not touching the darkest place that Orrick saw in the distance. He could see the bloods’ palace from there. No light ever touched that place. Even through the day, it remained black.
Past memories began to run through his mind, visions of his father and his mother disappearing as he ran with the others many years ago. He couldn’t save them. Sometimes he wished that he could have gone back and fought them off, but he was too young. He could remember his aunt, picking him up and carrying him away from the palace, as he watched his parents slaughtered. A tear began to slowly flow down the side of his cheek. He prayed that the rest of the clan was asleep. He would know what would happen if they saw their leader cry. He sucked it up, and looked onward.
He could hear footsteps behind him. Then, he heard Anell’s soft voice.
“Orrick?”
“You should be resting, Anell.”
“As should you.”
Anell walked over to Orrick’s side and sat next to him on the edge of the cliff. She looked over at him, with a concerned look on her face. Orrick continued to stare in the same direction with the same hard, serious expression.
“What is bothering you, brother?”
Orrick was silent for a while. If he told her what was on his mind, he didn’t want to shed another tear.
“Do you ever still think about Mother and Father?”
Anell looked into the distance with Orrick.
“All the time… But you shouldn’t let that bother you. It was many years ago.”
“It still haunts me.” said Orrick, in a slight whisper. Anell looked over at Orrick.
“You are our leader, brave and fearless, just as you always have been.”
“I always tell myself to be strong… to never show fear.”
“Everyone shows it…”
Orrick looked down a little, almost feeling ashamed. Anell put her hand on his shoulder.
“You are strong… and I have never seen any fear in your eyes.”
Orrick looked over at his sister, seeing a reassuring smile on her face.
“You will be fine.” said Anell in a soft tone. She put her arm around him and kissed the top of his head.
“Thank you.” He said.
Anell looked at him one last time.
“Get some rest.”
“You tell me this?”
Anell laughed a little, since it was Orrick who told her that she should be resting. Orrick stood up, and looked at his sister. He, himself, knew that he needed rest, but he needed a little more time.
Anell nodded her head, and turned and walked away. Orrick continued to look at her as she walked away. Orrick was lucky to have such a caring sister, which was willing to help him with his problems. Even as a leader, he had problems. He thought to himself, where would he be without Anell.
Orrick turned and looked once again toward the valley, staring into the darkness of the night.
