Well, I have to ask the public eye what it thinks -- for it's my first time in Photoshop! I'll be posting more as it progresses, so don't worry. :] Tools Used: Photoshop CS3, traditional ink pen. Character: "Kirada" Image Use: Graphic Novel Cover Time Taken: Around 3 days (school days, each about 44-60 minutes). This is just practice, and won't be the final project. Right now I'm just getting used to photoshop, having "play time," if you will. I haven't figured out all of the tools just yet, which is why I deem it "play time." So: Thoughts? First Image: Second: Third (final?): EDIT: I've added the third image, but I'm not sure how to create a background (not foreground) without ruining the current picture; I tried removing only Kirada, placing her in a different layer (one behind the "background"), but she had some white "glow" (around the lines there was an area of white), so I scratched that idea. Truth be told, I'm not sure what else I can do with it. :\ Sammeh: Thank you for your advice, it really helped. ^^ I used the smudge tool more than "just painting" because I noticed it gave it a more rugged, "furish" look to the shading. Of course, I like to smudge everything. Perhaps I've worked with chalk pastels for too long? XD ALL: The "third" image is actually the fourth, the third (without blood effects) can be seen by clicking HERE. EDIT #2: I've made some simple signatures, just for fun, as well as Photoshopping my cousin, Jessica (which you will see later). :] "Wolf Lover." Random Wolves

This is truly awesome! I love that shading!! <3
Grass tool: It's in the default selection of brush tips, if you already selected other brush sets, no worries, just click the little arrow in the brush selection panel and click "reset brushes". Always choose a foreground and background colour for it though coz it uses 'color dynamics'.

Great job Kirada! I can't wait to see more photoshop drawings from you. The Grass tool can be found on the tool bar across the top of your screen. There should be something that says 'Brush', click on that and you'll see 3 things, 'master diameter', 'hardness' and a scroll-down window full of brushes. Assuming your using the default set of brushes, (If not, see below) scroll down until you see two grass tools, The first one is best for beginners. If you aren't oin the default brushes set, click on 'brush' again and to the right of master diameter there should be a circle with an arrow in it, click on that and scroll down until you see 'reset brushes'. Finally, click on that to get the defalt set. Then follow the instructions above to get the grass tool. Have fun with photoshop!

It's very good for a first try o.o very clean too I do have a few things to critique (if you don't mind)
try to find other ways of shading, sometimes using the smudge tool so much can make anything look unprofessional, and it gets a bit sloppy. Even if it's the most amazing tool ever LOL try using the brush tool instead, like regular painting. If you make a mistake, don't undo it, go over it, and try to use the smudge tool as little as possible, but it does come in handy
also, the grass tool, is the crappiest thing everr LOOL it's good for something quick, and if that's what you're aiming for, use it. But remember, grass doesn't always look the same. BTW Katikut made some grass brushes, so check out her deviantART
Use the brush tool and paint the grass on, using different shades of greens blah blah yellows too. It usually looks much nicer than those crappy default brushes
Think of it as a traditional painting, but with little cheats every now and then (hence the undo buttons, erasers, all the nice things real life doesnt come with)
Again, awesome for a first time, it's very clean. And the eyes look awesome =]

One thing you could try with the lines is make all layers except the lines invisible, click "channels" tab at the top of the layers window, hold Ctrl and click, go to selections - inverse, click on the layers tab again, make a new one above the sketch layer and then choose the fill tool with black colour and click on the empty layer, deselect. Now you got a seperate lineart layer. ;] You can adjust the opacity so it doesn't look so harsh.
