A lot of things state that Balto, a beloved wolf-dog hero, was an American hero by finding the team to save all those children. But as history tells us, Balto wasn't an American Hero...

The area that became Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2 million dollars (at 2 cents per acre, about 5 ¢). Though Alaska was purchesed by the U.S during 1959.

Balto was a Russan Hero around his time. If I have anything wrong please tell me and I might get the picture if I'm wrong.

In 1925, Alaska was a territory of the United States. While it was not a state at the time, it was still U.S. property. Furthermore, most of the towns and villages of Alaska were very "Americanized" by then. Long since by then. The purchase of Alaska from Russia, after all, happened in 1867, nearly sixty years prior to the serum run. Sixty years is a long time.

Not sure...does this belong in the true story board?

They were still half Russan until the COMPLETE purchase in 1925. So I guess we can out Balto as a Russan/American hero now.

Oops, I put in in Balto 1. I should have looked more carefully for the right board. :P

I'm confused, Jerseycaptain has just given some facts stating that Alaska was essentially US property 60 years before 1925. Tesshin how is it that your saying Balto is a half hero of the Russian people when its been 60 years since the Russians could call it their own? The purchase didnt happen in 1925 according to JC, it happened 60 years before so in my view it still seems that history is correct in calling Balto a hero of the American people

Oh and by the way I'm English, so just thought I'd say that if you thought I might have been American and was just defending JC's arguement as if to keep Balto American ;) By the looks of it Balto was definetly a hero to the American people judging by the info that shows Alaska as part of the US for quite a while by then.
