Attacking a Member vs. Challenging Their Points

Something is really starting to bug me, regarding disputes on the site. People here seem to love their terms. Flaming being one of them. Which basically means attacking another member. Now, it's a shame to see that so many that love that term, don't know what it means. Or otherwise, publicly display a misunderstanding for it.

Let me make this perfectly clear - flaming is bashing another member, cussing them out, or generally demeaning them with harsh language or similar things. Challenging another member's points is NOT flaming that member. I have, very recently, seen very good examples of this. Someone calls flame and the topic gets locked. Go look at the respect topic and you'll see what I mean, hopefully. People here do a real dis-service to the intellectual minds of this site by writing off debating and challenging of points as flaming. Now of course, points should only be allowed to be battled within the rules, but I have rarely (if ever) seen a breach of that. Quite simply, enough people call a topic or members out on flaming, and it's flaming. Because there's a misunderstanding, for some reason it's usually flaming. So really, let's do the intellectual minds a big favor, and let them debate their points without being called out on flaming, okay?

Alrighty, I went back and changed every "attacking of points" to "challenging of points", and in one case replaced "attacked" with "battled". I think JerseyCaptain had a good point about how the word "attack" has a negative connotation.

Yes, much of the turmoil here is a result of misunderstanding and/or misinterpretation. When there is civil dispute, civil meaning that it's on a we-don't agree-on-this basis, points of course are going to be brought forward. However, when those points begin to challenge another's points, the person who is being challenged views it as a personal attack, and as such calls the other person or people out on it. It does hurt, because debate is good, so long as it stays within the rules and civil. It is very irritating that some people see fit to escalate the debate into something that is against the rules, such as flaming. It's even more irritating when the only flaming from that topic is from the one accusing others of the exact same thing.

I often find myself asking why I even bother with this place anymore.

I agree with all of the above. But one has to remember that there are a lot of teens and young people on this site, and at that age it is not uncommon for them to think that what they say is always right, and they take it as offence if someone does not agree. Being 14, I sometimes have these thoughts myself, even though I try and stave them off. It's just the way the mind works.

yes indeed i have seen this a few times, usally from the brand new and younger members picking up on our "terms" and using them to try to make it look like they know whats going on and they are gonna be some sort of hero becuase they are the first to say something like: "ohmygawd, you guys need to like, settle down, and quit flaming each other!!1!! " it's so stupid becuase most of the time, that will be ALL they post, nothing about thier opinion on the topic at all (spam)

Hey! I have to say I agree with you to a point Ghost, however, there is a misunderstanding of those terms both ways unfortunately. Some people see it as challenging your point when it's really flaming, and some people see it as flaming when it's really challenging the member's point. ...being misunderstood is just a fact of life I guess, and one we have to get used to as we mature. That said it doesn't mean we shouldn't raise awareness when we see it being a problem, and I applaud you for that.

Have a great day and God Bless!

No, the word we need is:

TROLLING

It's actually worse than flaming, because people who do that aren't stupid like flamers, but clever enough to do this just for their own amusement. And sometimes I have a funny feeling that the audience tends to call flaming almost everything that is against the common truth.
Basically, too much kids on the internet. Or, lemme rephrase, too much stupid people...

It's either that this site developed the word "trolling", or I'm just out of the loop. Most likely, I'm out of the loop. Because I've not heard that saying (if I did, I don't remember) before coming to this site.

Anyhow, I agree fully with your statement that there are too many kinds on the internet. This, and other online communities, such as Xbox Live, the kids under 13 or 14 generally ruin the experience for others.

Well, of course it's okay for an adult to be here. And as additional backing (though hardly needed, as that person's statement is utterly ridiculous), kids did not produce the film now, did they? Adults were responsible for that, and unless they simply hated their creation, which I doubt, they probably would have liked their film.

There is a fine line between Challenging peoples points and Attacking a member. I used to overeact to some things, but now I've matured a bit and see the difference between debating something and someone stating their point which IS aloud on Balto Source. Or, totally attacking a member for no reason at all.

Actually, I came on this site on my 12th birthday, than I was REALLY in-mature, but now Like you) I have suddenly 'Grown up' and I owe it all to BS.

Anyway, back onto topic, I agree with the topic of younge teens Exc Most of them are trolling and flaming because we simply have NO idea on how to fully discus matters without flaming.

And on the second topic there, yes adullts did make the film, evan if it was center'd around children, dose NOT mean it cannot be watched and maybe loved by adults. I know alot of adults who like Lion King, and a few that like Balto, "What, OMG, did you take the mic out of him?" Why should I? He has veryright to enjoy the film as I do.
