Its not a big problem. Normally after the first warning a member will stop using it. If not, they'll be taken care of. SMS isn't that big of a deal that members who use it need to be reported immediately; just if they use it continuously. Yup, I agree with you.

Well, I agree, the staff do all they can to stop SMS talkers on site. (I do talk in SMS, but only on MSN)

There's very little on this site which is more of an irritation and a distraction than that text speech. It's also embarrassing to think how cell phones and chat programs have so dumbed down those who use that text speech, that we have a whole generation who actually believe that the text speech they use is perfectly fine. The language and grammar of the English speaking countries is "duncifying". I have to wonder if such things occur in other languages. It certainly is an epidemic problem in the English language. And I hate to say it, but it is mostly the younger age groups who seem to revel in it. Few adults do...unless they're complete dunderheads (and I am not saying there aren't adults like that)... I agree, but, I only use it slightly. (Just Like LOL, brb, g2g Exc)

They are discussing the problem of SMS ("text speech") being used here, and whether or not a rule is needed to prevent it. As no one should have to "go with it" where that annoying habit is concerned.
Exactly! Quote: But those aren't the problem. Those were accepted shortcuts in the early days of chatrooms and instant message programs. It was the use of text messaging in cell phones which really brought "SMS" speech into the realm of stupidity, and the dumbing down of culture. Even the example this topic author provided is good.
When kids and teens use SMS to POST in a topic, article, or comment, that's taking it too far, and it definitely should not be permitted. I still don't like its use in chat and IM, but I can grudgingly deal with it there. I mean, if I, a middle-aged adult, can take the time to type out complete sentences, in correct spelling and grammar, at speed, a kid or teen should have no problem with keeping up.
ANyway, I agree, but thats all, the only thing I have to work out, is my full spelling, and how to get a keyboard witch each letter actually works.

SMS is a problem on this site that is true but we see it alot, all over the web, mainly in conversations in programs such as MSN, Yahoo, and AIM and a few others.
When I was a young teen, I never even heard of text talk and when I did, I never used it. I saw no reason to as I was comfortable with just typing out the words, which isn't so hard but there are people out there who like to type the 'easy' way. SMS is just a short way of typing and those who use it here, either:
A. Don't know how to type any other way because they have friends who send them text messages over the phone that say (and these are examples)
"C u l8tr" which, translated the right way is, "See you later"
or
"I g2g or gtg bbl" again, translated the proper way "I gotta go, or got to go, be back later"
and so on.
[b]B. They don't have friends who use it in an internet conversation or don't send them text messages using it. Yet, they come on here and see new members or others ignoring the rules that say don't use SMS (short message system) or text messaging as some call it, and they use the said SMS.
Bottomline here, is that no matter what, whether the rule is there or not, you're gonna have people on this site and anywhere else who uses it. The only thing you can do whether you're a member or a mod is:
A. If you're a member, kindly, give the person a warning and or explain what SMS is. If they continue to do it, don't insult them or anything like that, just use the 'Report to a mod' button, its there for a reason and a mod will handle the situation.
B. If you're a mod, same standards apply in the above first sentence. If the rule is continiously broken and the three warnings given, ban the person.
It's that easy.
I get tired of seeing some of the words cut down into one letter or two or three letters. Whining and complaining, (not that any of you are) is not going to tell these people to stop but being kind and enforcing the rules gently is and if that doesn't work report to a moderator and let him or her handle it.
