I just got back from Wall-E. After hearing unanimously awesome reviews from critics, I decided to check it out for myself to see just how good it was. After having seen it myself, I can tell you all outrageous hype and critical acclaim are justified. Wall-E is a masterpiece.
Before I get ahead of myself, here's the general outlook: A robot named Wall-E is the only surviving robot of an entire line designed to clean up an abandoned, polluted earth. After centuries of doing his job, Wall-E gains emotions by repeatedly watching a stray VHS of "Hello, Dolly". It's not long before Wall-E gets lonely. One day while picking up garbage, a probe robot named, EVE lands near his little hideaway. Wall-E falls in love, and it's not long before EVE and Wall-E start sharing time together. His little romance is cut short, though when he shows EVE what she was sent back to earth to find. EVE is taken away months after by a ship. Wall-E stows away on the ship as it's taking off in an attempt to find his lost love. It's not long after that that the adventure takes off (no pun intended). That's all I'm gonna give you as far as plot goes.
If you were apprehensive of the film's quality due to lack of dialogue, have no fear. Wall-E is a movie where actions speak MUCH louder than words. Wall-E's Charlie Chaplin-like antics are used frequently, but never quite get old due to the sheer cuteness of the character. The scenes that Wall-E and EVE share together all seem romantic, and there's a chemistry between them despite both characters being robots (Did I just say that?)
But what about the plot? Once the adventure begins, it's basically one long chase scene, but events build off of each other and a few new characters are introduced along the way that develop as much as they need to despite the film's rapid pace.
There's also a potent message about consumerism that teaches, but never preaches, although it comes on a bit too hard at times.
The thing that really made Wall-E for me is something that's not really possible to put into a critical standpoint. The movie has a living spirit that everything in it is built on, and it stays strong from the opening frames to the end of the credits. Something about it just seems magical. I don't think I ever remember a time in the theater where I smiled with glee at the pure heart and soul that has been put into a movie.
There is no doubt in my mind that Wall-E will be remembered as a classic by future generations. There is enough depth and complexity to fill fifty pages with, but at the same time, it's just so simple. See it. Bring your family. Be amazed.

9.9/10

This isn't your average animated movie. You really need to take a thinking approach instead of "this is just a kids' movie".
