First, it made this loud screeching/grinding sound. After that, I heard talking. I couldn't quite make it out, but it sounded like some kind of preaching. It probably picked up a frequency or something, but it's pretty weird nonetheless.

Many amateur radio users (HAM radio HF & VHF) tend to travel to amplifiers, receivers, et cetera. because of the tube within them that generates the amperes for your speakers. Your speakers simply relay what the tube picks up- whether it be a 6 meter repeater or an actual call signal.
A general fix to this is to get a 'stopper', which is a special magnetic material that can be snapped on to your amp's power cord. Generally the waves travel to the tube where the longer cables are- especially the ones that are the length of the radio wave. (e.g. A 4 meter wave will travel most efficient through an actual 4 meter cord in length, so it's good to cover that with a few stoppers.)
