Okay, time for a little rant, since this is becoming more and more common.
Some people... seem to think it is perfectly okay to render over somebody else's render without permission and upload it. Most of these people don't even put an acknowledgement (sp?) to make it bad enough.
Now some of you may think - "it's no big deal, they're just renders". Well. Let's say... you spent hours of work and patience into an image. You outlined and colored very carefully, and are very happy and proud of your results. You put them onto your gallery. So then after a day or so you check back to see if Good Comments or Constructive Comments have been made, some have, nice warm fuzzly feeling. Then you meander around the fanimages section, check a few other galleries out, and to your dismay, your image has been rendered over and they're generating all this praise and hubub for a work that wasn't theirs in the first place.
Before you start the "but renders aren't original anyway" - you may as well say all the desktops made with compiled images aren't original anyway. Or making a background based off something with permissions and all but it gets stolen for someone to chuck their character in.
Let me make it clear for those who need reminding - it is not allowed. You will be nabbed one way or another.
Often it seems there's people commenting on how those images are good even though they know it's from someone else's. They don't even bother to report it. In my book, it's an equal to assisting in crime. People should know this by now, but it seems the rule - and all other rules - need to be more strictly enforced. People are getting mere slaps on the wrists nowadays even for repeat offences and it needs to be improved so people get the message.

Also, if you're stepping over those bounds, you hold no copyright over the image. And as a little personal addition, rendering in my opinion just displays laziness of how you can't draw your own characters. Instead you revert to using screencaps from the movies and change the colors of the wolves. Don't really care how much time was put into it. It's not even your own creation. All it shows is that you can take the "paint bucket" on Paint and dab the entirety of Balto's muzzle in it and call him a different wolf. Pathetic if you ask me.

The fan images rules will see changes in the future. Only "good" renders will be allowed - it's a tricky rule, but it's the only solution to stop the current wave of ugly and cheap-made renders flooding the fan images. I suspect that when it will be managed and the galleries "cleaned", I think these problems will disappear as well... Also, using something that someone else did without asking for permission is not allowed, anywhere on the site. And it's already a site rule. So if you see something like this happening, then tell a mod. (there are links to tell mods "automatically" at the bottom of the pages)

I do agree that it should at the very least be a courtesy to direct people to the original "renderer." I don't particularly care as much about my fan images as I do about my fan art tho. However, I need to comment that I'm sick and tired of seeing halfassed renders. For example, screenshot with crappily made subtitles/word bubbles or other font font without any effort put into them is making me want to throw up on some child's head just about as much as the lame articles being posted do.
But yeah, since this website already directs people to other Balto websites, the person re-rendering an image should at least tip their hat to the person who rendered it. Since I guess rendering could be a type of photomanip., proper credit could be reinforced more.

I personally don't like renders.
To me it seems the same as someone coming along and taking one of my drawings or any other artist's drawing, colouring over it and saying "this is mine" when it's quite obviously not theirs.
Renders really are quite a watse of time, in the time people spend trying to "improve at making renders" did it ever dawn on any of them they could be spending the same time to improve at actually drawing their own pictures and colouring them? That way you can't be accused of any type of theft or copyright infringement.
Yes, people -should- cite the person who originally rendered said screenshot but there's really not much that can be done if someone does take your render and just simply recolour it again because you do not own the original art.
People always refer to these images as being property of the companies (e.g. Disney, Universal etc.), which they are, however...have any of you ever thought how the artists who actually drew and animated these movies feel if they see someone who'd coloured over their art and was now calling it their own? I'd bet they feel the same way you do at seeing someone colour over your "renders".
I myself got not much out of doing a render, I did one a while ago and it took me quite a while to do and all I felt after doing it was "waste of time", the same amount of time could have been spent far better. Renders are generally quite pointless and it's getting very boring looking at them, even the -good- ones.

Hey, if y'all want steet to get rid of them, fine, no skin off my nose xD I think it'd be better to get rid of them too, personally. I just do them cuz I'm bored. May as well if no one's gonna be giving credit to everyone.

I have to agree with Cobalt here. WAY too many fan images are stolen and rendered over. Mostly I say this because a lot of my renders have been stolen, and, like Cobalt said, no one noticed or cared enough to do something other than myself.
