This Detroit stuff is WRONG. Utterly and completely wrong. And there is NO sane defense for it. No excuse.
Spoken like someone who knows squat about such traditions. Yeah, that's right. I read those articles and they're wasn't a lot of information. Besides, don't you even know these Original Six teams and any of their traditions? Come up with an argument against them, and they'll slam you right back. And if you really anger them, they might come after you and then come down on you like Boba Fett on a bounty.
Mm-hmm. More flaming. Which earns you a report to the moderators. Threats are pointless...especially on the internet. And to use them demonstrates the kind of person you really are. And sure - I can see a bunch of liquired-up, knuckleheaded Red Wings fans driving or flying all the way out to New Jersey just to try and seek me out and redress some perceived slight against their persons (which you and I both know is not going to happen - and which I would have no fear of either way. AND which would literally be impossible).

However, discussion about other team traditions would be off-topic anyway...unless those DID involve the abuse of living or dead animals for the sake of a cheap rush. *Reported*
(You're attempt to fan this into a flame war, in order to get this locked and shut me and everyone else who might agree, is going to fail, Wolf_Bassist. I am not going to fall for that. You want to make a fool of yourself? Be my guest.)

I agree that if the animal was dead or alive it's a horrible thing...But don't you think it would be even more disturbing and...just plain wrong if it was alive? Don't get me wrong though, I believe in respecting the dead.
To be honest, it's sick and just as it was mentioned, barbaric. It's kinda funny how humans claim to be the most sophisticated and intelligent creatures on earth...yet look at the idiot things we do.
Oh it surely
would be more disturbing if the animals were alive at the time! And octopi can live for a long time out of water. It's just another instance of the
lack of sophistication in our species...specifically in professional sports fandom (in general, that is...not overall). Interesting that the NHL has ACTUALLY forbidden the practice of throwing things out onto the ice, during a game, for a long time. And yet, these "put-upon" Red Wings fans think the league is singling them out for unfair bias.
There are plenty of good sports fans out there - people old and young (and in between) who love the sports they do, maybe know the stats, know the players, know the team histories and trends, the league politics and happenings, and keep tabs on the scores and seasonal progress of the leagues, etc. And that's all well and good, and quite normal.
The image I get from this ugliness, however, is the classic case of the moronic, obsessive sports fan. Here's an ideal image: in a sports bar, or a restaurant with one or more big screen televisions playing some professional sporting event, and there are a handful of loud, drunken idiots sitting together watching intently. And everytime something interesting or exciting happens in the game, these louts start in with their noisy intrusion - cupping their hands and engaging in a loud, drawn-out, deliberately-slow clap fest. That obnoxious sports clap we've probably all heard in any restaurant with a bar and a television...or a sports bar overall. And they do this all while yelling things like "
WOOOOOO!" or "
YEAH!!" or "
AL-RIIIGHT!!" As loud, intrusive and obnoxious as humanly possible. All through the game. Again - boneheads. Or, as we both have inferred - barbarians. With no social graces.
Hey - no one can fault them for loving their favorite teams, and having a good time and applauding and all the usual stuff (and I cannot deny that I love watching the local football, baseball and even occasionally the hockey games - the professional stuff...
recreationally. Not to bet on them or keep tabs on scores and stats...that falls into the realm of hardcore fandom. And I am NOT a hardcore sports fan). And in a sports bar, or a restaurant catering to the sports crowd, I guess you have to expect that, as irritating as it may be. Of course, such behavior is not limited to just bars and restaurants catering to that sort of crowd. But THAT stuff (particularly that cupped-hand clap, which is no better than finger nails scraping across a blackboard if you ask me) is a bit too much for the sanity of the normal patrons to be sure.
Anyway, there is absolutely,
positively NO excuse for abusing an animal...be it dead or alive. And this is clearly abuse. And I have never, ever heard of that sort of behavior being practiced by any other modern professional sports team, coach or fan. And were I to, I would be JUST as deprecating of them too. However, from where I'm standing, it seems Detroit Red Wings fans, and the moron who started it all, have cornered that market.
Well I think that it's fine to be as enthusiastic as you want if you're at home, at the rink or at you buddies....But in a public restaurant? That's just really like impolite and I would see them as moronic
Is it really worth keeping up such a cruel tradition? No, it's really not...It's ridiculous, we have so many other ways to express ourselves...We have so much new technology, yet we still do these kinds of stupid traditions. It makes us look really barbaric.
