Hey everyone,

I just wanted to give a little reminder to all dog owners out there ! I'm sure at least some of you are aware of worms in dogs and know that they shouldn't be left untreated. Although, heart worms are much more serious in my opinion. If heartworms are left untreated they can result in the death of your beloved dog.

So, the point of me creating this topic is to make you aware(or remember) to get heartworm prevention pills for you dog. Trust me, it's worth it. At my house we treat my dog with an oil that we rub onto her neck and it sinks into her skin to prevent it. (Don't worry, it's not just any oil, we got it from the vet, it works).

What do you guys do to prevent heartworms in your dog? Or do you not do anything?

Good post ^^

I give my dogs heartworm prevention pills. I used to use cheese to cover the flavour, but they grew wise to that and would eat the cheese and spit out the pill xD Now I either give them the pill with a bit of bacon, or put the pill at the back of their mouth and rub their neck to make them swallow.

Glad to hear that you're taking care of that !=)

My friend put the pill inside her dog's mouth and rubbed his nose. Oddly enough it actually works. =P

You see, most dogs tend to lick their noses after it's been rubbed, so, since the dog licked his nose the pill would basically fall to the back of his throat XD

They like it because it's beef flavored.

just a hint.. i never gave my dogs heart worm but you know what i did research and it is REALLY RARE that dogs get heart worm.. and like 1 out of 100 or 1000 will get it. Even my personal vet told me she said i can give it to them but she said " Well you don't have to but dogs rarely give it to them cuz it never really happens. We've only gotten 4 cases and thats it" and i'm not lieing hehe.. so if you give your dogs those treats it's basically a waste of money although when i do go to the vet i get them checked for it in case. but hey thats my opinion.. but if you're a breeder like my cousin recommend giving it to them..

You can't say that they never really happen. Because if that were true...no dogs would suffer from heartworms. It's better to prevent it, then to treat it when it happens. It's more expensive to treat than it is to prevent. So, rather than let my dog have the chance of getting heartworms and me spending alot of money, I'd prevent it. =)

Yeah, I agree with Emily. Heartworm is a horrible thing for your dog to go through. You can't really say preventing it is a waste of money because, like Emily said, treating it is much more expensive.
Prevention doesn't cost a lot, anyway.

Shadowe15. Go to the link below. Click on "adults" on the left-hand menu. Then tell me heartworm isn't common.
