In the first movie Balto, when Balto gave Rosie's hat back to her Rosie knew Balto's name right away? Is there supposed to be a part before this movie that the directer cut out in the movie?

Because Rosie already knew Balto before she was hospitalized.

I think Balto was just known to the inhabitants of Nome as a part wolf who was a scavenger of food. They probably feared him slightly because of his wolf side so more or less would chase him away but most likely I can imagine the only way Balto would survive was if he scavenged food from Nome so they probably recognised and then saw him as a nuisance more than anything else. In the cartoon world in which they live whoever named him first as Balto matters very little but it does seem established that everyone knows him as Balto the part wolf dog.
