OKay, well, yesterday I was watching History Channel's: Monster Quest. They brought up a topic that was very interesting to me: The Maine Mystery Beast. The Maine Mystery beast has said to been some kind of mutated dog/ wolf hybrid. I continued watching the episode and a woman was at home and her dog started barking. So she opened the door and walked out a few steps into her yard, and in the corner of the yard she saw a black/charcoal dog/ wolfish looking thing. She said they locked eyes for a few seconds, (they eyes glowed an amber red) and the animal charged of through her yard. Days later, she walked to her backyard, and the animal was lying there dead. It was struck by a car while chasing a cat. The animal was very big but not heavy. It was only 40-50 pounds and had short limbs and a massive head. She took photographs. (I will show you them at the end) After the creature was decomposed, she sent the remains, bones and fur, teeth and whatnot, to go get DNA tested. THe results were only alittle helpful. The animal has some kind of canine athnicity in it, but was unable to be identified. The subject was male, and was thought to be some kind of mutant wolf hybrid. Reports of this creature have been all over maine. They are thought to have been Coyotes with mange, dingos, fishers, and even heyenas. I dont know here to find the picture but they showed you another photographed picture of a scrawny looking somewhat canine looking creature that was all black, had short, or little fur, a small sort of deer like head and some spots on its cheeks. THis creature was thought to have been a wolf/ heyena hybrid. I wish I had the picture. But now, it's up for you to decide, what do you think the Maine Mystery Beast is? I have come to a conclusion that this animal IS canine, HAS wolf in it, MAY have Chow-mix in it, but the rest is uknown. tell me what you think. Here are the pictures of the head and body, along with pictures of chow mixes and chow wolf crosses, I did a comparison, tell me what you think:

It kinda looks like he has some German shepherd in him too. Maybe a wolf/German shepherd, Chow chow , St. bernard mix? Looks like a mix of a bunch of different breeds. Pretty interesting.

Well first and foremost, a wolf and a hyena cannot have offspring. Usually in the case of hybrids, they are under the same genus, or two closely related genuses in the same taxonomic family (no idea on the spelling of the plural form of genus). For instance, in the case of a liger (a lionXtiger cross), both cats are under the genus Panthera. The wolphin (false killer whaleXbottle-nosed dolphin cross) are in the same family Delphinidae and are also fairly close related species. The same rules apply to most ursine hybrids (polarXgrizzly for example), canine hybrids (example: dogXcoyote), camelid hybrids (example: bactrian camelXdomestic llama), and equine hybrids (horseXzebra). Of course, despite the hybrids that are possible, there are impossible hybrids - like the dox (dogXfox or wolfXfox).

A hyena-dog hybrid is utterly impossible in the natural course of nature. While hyenas may look dog-like, nothing can be further from the truth. For example, a Tasmanian Tiger looks similar to a dog, the animal was actually a marsupial whereas the dog is a placental mammal. In the case with hyenas, they are more closely related to cats, but are under their own genus and family (which is Hyaenidae in comparison to Felidae and Canidae). The only way you would get a dogXhyena would be to graft hyena genes onto a dog embryo and I doubt that will happen.

That leaves it to be a wolf-dog (which isn't really a hybrid if you think about it), a coy-dog (coyoteXdog hybrid), a coy-wolf (coyoteXwolf hybrid), a dog, any of the above with a mutation, any of the above with a disease, or any of the above that simply look strange. A dingo, by the way, is just a feral dog. From the photos of the canine, it looks also in the midst of decomposition - i,e - bloating. As for the glowing eyes bit and over fearful paranoia, I'd chalk that up to mass hysteria - similar to the reports of werewolves in Wisconsin.

It's interesting you say that because one of the possabilities hat was mentioned was that this animal/creature could have been an experiment and somehow got loose in maine, but until the analysis of another one of these species are shown, we don't have anything but this creature for now. I wish I could have found the photos of a heyena-looking creature that was also said to be the Maine Mystery beast. It said tha somehow a breed of Heyenas could have possably crossed into maine and the photo was a black heyena with mange. That was another possability. I dont know if I said that already but the photo was incredable.

I Googled the thing and got a whole bunch of sites, creepy. It looks like a mix of a whole lot of breeds, including wolf. But it could have been some poor dog that a mad sciencetest found and did experiments on.
