Your first argument, while a good point about the need for villains in any really good story, is like saying we should applaud the devil because his actions in the world give the righteous something to do. As to the second, when was Steele picked on for being a wolfdog?
I can't speak for everyone, but I frankly do like Steele, as a villain. But in the tradition of classic theater-going, I show my appreciation of his performance by booing.

his character is somewhat makes sense. even in the modern world.
he wants fame.
and Balto, the outcast, ruined it. (by running faster than him at the beginning of the movie)

it's pretty normal that he hates Balto for that.

and then Balto tried to steal his fame again by rescuing his followers. atleast that's what he think.


oh, and he's the most handsome dog in the film!!! XDDDDDDDD

Actually DragonTamer made the point I was thinking quite well, his comparison of Steele's actions to 'the devil' was just an example, he wasn't saying anything remotely along the lines that Steele was infact the devil but instead making a point about not congratulating Steele just because of the outcome. Tulip's argument seemed to applaud Steele's harsh, arrogant and mean ways just because of the end result, in all fairness we don't know what could have happened if Steele left Balto alone or just tolerated him. Steele would still have gotten lost and if Balto was there he would help lead them back and if he wasn't he'd definitely go out to find them, it's in his nature and regardless of what happened at the end Steele's actions were still not justified and wrong.

He's one of my favourite characters.
He's a great, great char, and not super-duper mean. He's perfect!
His attitude is very charming, and sorta mean. That's alot of people like him.
He is also very handsome

I don't have a problem with Steele, surprisingly XD. But I think he was rather mean to Balto, I mean so what if he was part wolf? But I really don't have a problem with Steele, I mean even if he did want fame atleast he bothered to try and bring the medicine back. But Balto beats Steele paws down in my opinion.

I think comparing Steele to the devil is a bit far. Mostly cuz I'm not religious, but that's beside the point

I think hating Steele for being a villian is like hating Balto for being a hero. I loved Steele, he was the most colourful and entertaining character in the film, and not the mention, the hottest! Sure, he was mean to Balto, and many kids can relate with bullies. Bullying Balto for being part wolf is the same as a white kid bullying a black kid for being black...I don't think it's anything personal, just a racial thing, but with dogs. I think it's a dead interesting idea, because as I said, many kids can relate.

I think Steele has a good reason for hating wolves anyway. I have a possible fiction idea why.

I think his arrogance, pride and perversness is what made him such a fantastic and realistic villian. Which is why I love him

Heh, people hate him because the animators (sorta) wanted people to!

Notice how the other characters have such different designs and his makes his features quite sharp and his eyes quite small in comparison to his head and body?

Compare him to Scar and Zira from TLK, all have the same theme going on. The sharper features and smaller looking eyes make people psycologically (sp?) fearful/hateful of them and show more contrast between the good and bad characters.

I guess I'm cursed. When I want people to dive deep into what I say, they take it at its shallowest. When I want them to go for face value, they pick it apart piece by piece.

People hate Steele because they're jealous of his awesome smexxyness. That's all that needs to be said.
