I was thinking about the way steel trated balto. For most of us on here its odviously hatrid and will not denie(sp) that. However consider this, everyone sees Steel for what he is the anitagonest the bad guy we love to hate and the one dog all others feared and dislike. Could it have been that the very same dog that was indeed feared/hated by all others (or at least most) in Nome was the very same dog that secretly feared Balto? Remember the sceen in the ally he let kaltag, nikki, and star prepare to fight his battle he fears the you hybrid (or at least dosen't want him to "Mess up his face"). And also recall he reaction when balto first ran beside him to grab rosey's hat balto's speed and seer apperence surprised the old dog. Consider the fact that the one sided fight that happed between Steel and Balto when Balto found the team, Steel fought because he knew if he didnt take the medican home he wouldnt get credit, Steel knew that if he didnt at least attempt to disorent Balto that they had a much greater chance of reaching Nome then Steel. I looked over the movie and they're are other examples but their hard to explain umm next time u watch it pay close attention to way he acts around Balto and his reactions at the small amout of comments tward balto which are actul good ones. I think he fears the hybrid or at least fears being dethroned especialy by the town outcast/ what seems to be the town hybird/stray, idk what do think? Oh please dont flame its only my oppinon i was bored and my mind started to wounder into deep thoughts, lets have a nice clean disscusion please, thanks

Nice points but I think your reading to much into it and therefore trying to find or create subtelty's that aren't there. You make some good points but most of your theories are explained with full reasons clearly and shown thouroughly throughout the film to not need them.

You said about Steele saying "Get him" to the trio, in all fairness I just thought that was mainly up to Steele finding himself above Balto, almost to good for him to merely think about laying a paw on him (Hence why he got his lackies to do the dirty work and Steele himself spitting on Balto). Also Steele stepping on Balto's paw so that the musher would view him as Steele somewhat viewed him 'a viscous stray wolf' and as Steele thought of Balto, an animal not to be trusted due to him being a wolf. Finally the final fight scene was almost a catalyst waiting to be unleashed, all of Steele's pure hate against Balto finally poured forth when he saw the other dogs ready to side with Balto over Steele to get him home. Over the journey he denied being lost and was angered by the doubt that they had for him so when Balto appeared knowing the way back to Nome Steele would have most likely only harboured feelings of hate towards Balto, not fear . However I do agree with the ideas behind the points you make. Especially with the fight scene, as Steele probably feared being almost 'dethroned' by Balto as he wouldn't be the hero and recieve the admiration he wanted but Balto instead would be the hero for rescuing them. So in a sense yeah he could have held some fear for Balto but only in the sense of losing his position of power to Balto who he thought of nothing but scum as he wanted to be the "top dog".

thanks for your oppinon and aye i gree with you it could also have been disgust that a mangy mongrel like balto fight him i used the sceen in the ally because it the best sceen that shows steel dosen't really fight his own battles or least when B's involved it shows his cowardes (if that's a word) and such. That and when im bored i tend to over anaylze things Balto was just on my mind at the time :)
