Ooo! I do like this idea. But I think that the box for older members, being older in years (like what, 17 and up?), is the best idea. Instead of just having the age thing to keep younger members out, have a question that only people of a certain age/generation know the answer to. I mean, it would be an excellent place to have a discussion/roleplay with mature minded members without getting a "OMG U R SOOO DUMB!" Of course, those who act immature can get banned outta that box too However, I'm not sure about the whole yaoi and shounen-ai/yuri and shoujo-ai... If we were going to have that as well, I think the best place to put it would be on another site entirely... I mean, personally, I'm okay with it, but I know for certain there are others who would be fairly squeamish about the whole sexual situation. Mmm. And maybe even go one step beyond advanced roleplaying... Elite... hehe. But a mature sister-site to Balto Source might be a good route to take.

And whatever that "yaoi" is, you need to make that clearer so we all can understand. A box like that should not be designed just to once again suit the liberal crowd, but should be suitable to ALL older members. Thus sexual, deviant, violent, politlcal or otherwise controversial content and discussions should not be permitted. It's not just about protecting kids..it's about being sensible. (Ooh...watch some of the responses NOW... ) That's why you can choose not to enter the box or ignore those talks! If something I'm not comfortable with is being discussed, I either a) ignore it and do something else or b) just politely ask if they can either tone it down or move their convo to PMs because I'm not comfortable with it being discussed. And I'm sure the mature members that would be in there (aka all of them) would be considerate enough to do so. Personally, I think it's a good idea. I'd think a 14 and up restriction would do it, since by then a lot of the members usually know how to handle such discussions. If they choose to abuse the box, then they lose privileges to it. Simple. A sister site would produce more problems than simply an extra box. Managing a box would be fairly easier, too - just set a limit based on birth date and only take into account the FIRST birth date given upon registration to avoid people trying to change their birth date to get in. Besides, it'd be fairly easy to spot the ones that aren't as old as they say they are. There'd be limits, of course... no extremities in the discussion subjects that would usually be not allowed.

Has there ever been a glitch that caused everyone able to view the mod box? Not that I recall. Indeed, it may be an issue if a younger member manages to get in... you can't really place the blame on the box itself, it's a bit like the R rated fanfics... it's partially also the kid's fault for trying to get onto such a thing when they knew they weren't supposed to... If we made a sister site, the problem is that it'd be harder to keep these determined little buggers that want to have their nose in everything out. We'd have to link the accounts from BS onto there and once again take the first birth date given. Also, this simply isn't a kid's site anymore. The majority of the people on here are 13-24, not 6-10 as everyone seems to be implying. ( viewtopic.php?f=6&t=19877) I'd have to think an entirely different section of the site would have to be how it would be done. There's also the option (as Selene said earlier) to have all descriptive stuff forbidden which would be most suitable, 13 and up allowed but have a warning message for 13-16 year olds about the stuff that might be in there. It does seem like too much trouble for nothing really... it might produce some more activity, which the site still needs, but at a price...

I think it's a great idea.
Yes, this site is supposed to be 'kid-friendly'. But honestly, as Cobalt said, the majority of it are teenagers and adults. And I am personally getting sick of everything having to be kept so 'kid-friendly', as I'm sure alot of the older members here are.
And it is something that can be entered by someone's choice. If you don't like the box, stay away from it, it's as simple as that. If someone enters and gets offended or whatever, it's their own fault for entering. No one asked them to go into the box, did they?
So yah, I think it's a great idea. It will also make the site more appealing to older members.

Hmmm... Hmmm...
You know, I'd like to see Steet's opinion on this... I mean, Balto was released in the early 1990s - before the younger and youngest members were even born. Odds are that the fandom will gradually grow up... But yet, it is constantly being re-introduced like I don't know, 101 Dalmatians and The Lion King as well as other Amblin/Universal/Dreamworks pictures.
Personally I think the best (and most optimal) way to go would be to have a mature site for the older members which is somehow affiliated with this site - either a direct Animation Source site or one that is run independently. However, if we were going to make a mature Animation Source, we would need Steet's direct involvement, which I highly doubt he'd have the additional time to monitor. Though *rubs temples* if there was a mature add-on to it, it could be done in a similar fashion as the two pages (being Balto and Lion King) with proper filters to keep kids out of it. But then again, it would be more work for Steet... So I guess I'd go back to what I said at the beginning of this post to say that Steet should say something in effect to this idea.
But in regards to the issues being raised (roleplay and related behavior disturbing/offending older members), I think that there should be rules to such a box (if that is the route that is decided by the group or by Steet)... Right now though, I'm at a loss for ideas for such rules...
