Has anybody watched the original Japanese, or at least read the Manga? xD
Anyways for those who haven't, before I explain the plot I'll tell you who's who:
Rei = Raye
Makoto = Lita
Ami = Amy
Usagi = Serena

The plot in the anime is different from the Manga, and totally different from the Live Action(Which I recently finished watching xD).
The series takes place in Japan, and is a sequel to the Manga "Codename: Sailor V". Codename: Sailor V never got made into an anime, sadly.
The protagonist of Sailor Moon is Tsukino Usagi, who was a normal high school student until she was found by one of the talking-cat guardians, Luna. Luna tells Usagi that the world is in great danger from being attacked by the Dark Kingdom. Usagi also learns that she is Sailor Moon. At first she doesn't believe Luna, but Luna tricks her to say her Henshin phrase, thus, turning her into Sailor Moon.
The show has five series(Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R, Sailor Moon S, Sailor Moon SuperS, and Sailor Stars).
About the Characters
Usagi - Usagi is the main character of the series, and is also Sailor Moon. She begins as a crybaby, but eventually grows.
Ami - Ami is one of the Inner Senshi(And companion of Sailor Moon), and doubles as Sailor Mercury, Senshi of water. She's a A+ student, and is known for loving Romance novels.
Rei - Rei is one of the Inner Senshi(And Companion of Sailor Moon), who doubles as Sailor Mars, Senshi of Fire. She's very spiritual, and works as a priestess. She can easily sense evil even when in her normal form.
Makoto - Makoto is one of the Inner Senshi(And Companion of Sailor Moon), who doubles as Sailor Jupiter,Senshi of Lightning. She's known as a tomboy, and is usually alone because both of her parents died, leaving her to care for herself.
Minako - Minako was the first Senshi(The main character in Code Name: Sailor V ), and acted on her own until Sailor Moon and the other senshi were awakened. Her cat companion is Artemis, and with his help she transforms into Sailor V(enus), Senshi of Love. She's the leader of the Inner senshi, and dreams of becoming a famous Idol. While in the Live Action(Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon) she is a famous idol and pretends to be the Moon Princess so no harm comes to Usagi.
Chibiusa - She's Usagi's and Mamoru's daughter from the future. The first time she was seen in the series she was seeking help from Sailor Moon. The second time she was seen, it was for training to be a Senshi. She acts a bit more mature than her mother does at times, and wishes to grow up to be a beautiful lady like her mother(Awwww :3 ). In Senshi form she's known as "Sailor Chibi Moon".
Setsuna - Setsuna is one of the Outer Senshi, who doubles as Sailor Pluto, Senshi of Time. She's mysterious, and doesn't appear until later Arcs. She protects the Space-Time door from those un-worthy to enter(XD). She's distant from the others, but is also friendly at times.
Michiru - Michiru is one of the Outer Senshi, who doubles as Sailor Neptune, Senshi Of the Ocean. She's well known for playing the violin, and having her personalty corrupted in the English Series. Michiru and Haruka are Yuri(Since we're not allowed to use the real term, I'll use the anime term >> ), and are also partners.
Haruka - Haruka is one of the Outer Senshi, who doubles as Sailor Uranus, Senshi of the Sky. She's the partner of Michiru, and looks rather manly, so is often mistaken for a man.
Hotaru - A quiet reserved girl, who is weak due to a lab accident when she was younger. It's later learned she is Sailor Saturn, The Senshi of Silence.
