My apologies if this topic is already posted. (Though I doubt it is.)

Everyone knows that Balto is part wolf in the movies, right. And everyone knows that all of his and Jenna's pups are part wolf too. But I have a question. How was that possible? I'll tell you why I ask this. I have learned a while ago that if you mix two of the opposite species, like a donkey and a horse, they can produce fertile offspring (a mule). But if that mule mates, the female will not be able to produce offspring because the male doesn't deliver anything fertile. Some of you may know this already.
Now, like I said, everyone knows that Balto is a mix between a dog and a wolf (in the movies). And then in the second movie, out pops his children, and I was wondering, how did that happen if he was a mix? How did he deliver anything fertile? I know it's just a movie, but still, the makers have to think sometimes. (If my theory is right.)

Please post your opinion.

Because wolves and dogs are the same species.

Exactly! It would just be like crossing two different breeds of dog, horse, whatever.

Oh, alright. I just thought that dog and wolf were in the same family, not the same species.

They used to be classified as seperate species until very recently.

aleuandjenna14--> I don't think they are coming out with one. We may have already established that. Are you new? If so, welcome. But this is the wrong topic to be talking about that. Don't mean to bring you down.

Well, it'd be Balto and Jenna's offspring more likely to be infertile, not Balto. 'Tis explained on the Wolfdog page of Wikipedia, however much I dislike that place.

No, Dogs are Canine, wolves are Lupine, both are part of the Canid family but different "branches".

As far as I know wolf/dog hybrids are fertile in some cases, I don't know for certain though, better to ask someone who knows hybirds better.

I agree they are not exactly the same species but the are breedable together like whitewolf(uk) Posted they are diffrent but only in some ways. I must admit my friend has a Pet who is Part Wolf/Part Bull Dog i know its not the same but he has mated and his mate ended up with Pups so it can Happen

Edited: Words: Friend (missed spelt as frend)

Actually, dogs and wolves are the same species since the dog was recently (and controversially) classified as Canis lupus familiaris - a subspecies of the grey wolf. But dogs are wolves that have evolved to live alongside humans and are capable of recognising certain human gestures - an abilty that the wild wolf does not possess. That's why some people are against crossing wolves and dogs.
