Cosplaying is just merely dressing as an Anime character.
You're probably going to be very upset with me for expressing my opinion here, but I don't mean to offend or alienate you. But a person is entitled to his opinions. And I was just trying to give Banshee mine, in a subtle way, without going into detail on here. I talked with her later about it outside of this setting. But, since you asked...
To me, the whole furry thing is just plain weird. Geeky. Nerdy. Like extreme Star Trek fans dressing up like those characters...or Star Wars fans...or Lord of the Rings fans...or Harry Potter fans...or Chronicles of Narnia fans...or LARPers. And then gathering in groups like that and having conventions...lol. Yeah. Playing dress up and prancing around like an animal, making animal noises, aping animal behavior...that's abnormal.
I went to one of those Star Trek conventions once, YEARS ago. Out of curiosity...to see if what was said about extreme Star Trek fans was all true (because, in truth, I am a Star Trek fan...just not an extreme one...). And I was dismayed to find out that EVERYTHING people say about extreme fans is entirely true.
And it's not just the wearing of this, what is it now...fur suit? It's so many of them believing they ARE, somehow, an animal just locked in a human body.

That's not normal. And going and acting LIKE an animal in some big suit meant for a child's birthday party or something is just...weird.
And don't get me started on that "yiff" nonsense.
Now, I'm not condemning any person who's into this. But I do think it's weird. VERY. Well, you asked. Go ahead, and get back on topic now.
I kind-of agree with you there, Jersey. However, there's a small bit I'd like to talk about.

That's not normal.
This is within a scientific area of research called anthrozoology, and is, in fact proven to be caused by a hormone and genetical disorder, but it is not abnormal. There is an estimate of 50% of the world population has an anthrozoologic side. So it's neither normal or abnormal, besides; who defined "normal" anyway? It can't be defined. Yes, there is a "normal" in moral relations, which then again is nothing but what the majority thinks. And yes, there is a norm for normal behaviour, but once again this is defined by the majority's subjective view upon it.
I, for once, believe that we all have some kind of animal locked inside of us (which is partly true, because we are related to primates, which are animals), but more spiritually than physically. That this "entity" is in fact your very own spirit, your animalistic side. I believe we all have one, and that depending on how we are, we all have a different animal "symbol".
For instance; I am a loner. I hate crowds, and well... I hate most other humans too (the only remarkable exception is BaltoSource and my family, and the few friends I have). But I am fierce at defending my beliefs and what I love.
Thus, I believe I match the Wolf symbol. A fierce loner.
Many studies actually approve of my, and many others' theories about anthrozoology.
Also, anthrozoology is mainly the study of animal-human interactions and relationships (i.e the bonds between a pet and its owner).

But extremists are a bit over my limit of acceptance, I'll admit that. Though one would need facts to make oneself an opinion. I, who is human right's activist, who still generally hate humans, but is very obsessed with justice, can perfectly understand why some people would like to believe that they are really animals locked in a human body, because of what humans do. We do warfare, we destroy everything we touch, even our own planet, we're the cause of so many bad things on this earth. Pollution, I say we are a major factor for Global Warming as well, and similar.
But to go back on topic;
The cosplay is a source to let your imagination loose, and I wish I could come to the convention... Unfortunately, living in Norway, that could be a tad bit hard.
You're going to tell us about it when you've been there, I hope?
