Dude, if you saw people die, you'd have a change of heart too XD
That rather depends, doesn't it? Would Steele actually care? I hazard to guess no. But, allow me to explain.
While I don't agree with all of it, in Kant's Categorical Imperative we are entreated to treat all people as ends in themselves rather than means to ends. All people are their own selves, and not tools to advance our own objectives (Which is why I'm surprised Rand cribbed that bit for Objectivism, when the hyper-capitalist underpinnings and extreme self-involvement thereof work best when other people are seen as means and not ends.)
Now, with that part described, we must look at Steele's psychology. Spoiled, self-absorbed, vain, dismissive. Steele treats all people as means to ends. The team is there to make him look good. Jenna is in his sighs to satisfy his desire. Humans give him food and praise. That's not likely to change because people died. If anything, he'll get worse. The others were too weak to make it. He alone could survive the horrible conditions. And even if he failed in his mission, he's alive. He slunk back with his skin and a good yarn.
Mind, this is all pure speculation, but given what has been seen of Steele, he lacks empathy and compassion. He feeds his appetites, and fails to learn from his mistakes or take the advice of others.
Forgive me. I'm practicing to be an amateur rhetoritician.
