Since I don't have a picture right now, I'll do the best I can for step-by-step. Any questions; e-mail me at
[email protected] 1.) First, you have to get the pose in mind. "Freelancing" a pose usually (but not always) ends in disaster. Once you have this in mind, start with the guildines (or "structure") of the picture. I suggest practicing with headshots before you move on to full-body.
2.) Now you can start the rough sketching. The "crosshairs" (+) are used for eye, nose, and mouth placement. They are very handy for anatomy.

3.) Now you can start the "base sketch," which is the sketching that you intend to use later on the line for the actual picture. I suggest you first make the shape of the head. And, if the mouth is open, create the lower jaw. Then you can create the details such as the eyes, nose, and outer mouth.

4.) Now you can start a better form - the "actual sketch." This is the step where you can add - and take away - any detail you do or don't need.

5.) After finishing your "actual sketch," you can ink. This will allow your drawing(s) to be more clean. Be sure that, if you're drawing in pencil, to erase the sketch lines (or if you're using computer program[s]). These might confuse the viewer(s). This is also
another chance to add desired detail (fur, pupils, irises, et cetera).

6.) Add some color -- and if you want, a little bit of shading to add depth to your animal.
