So in school, we read a report on sled dogs. We had to do a creative writing assignment about sled dogs, so I decided to write a story. I only remembered about it when I was getting my assignments handed back to me, and I've decided to post it here. I like critiques, and as always, comments are accepted ;]

The story is basically about a sled team getting supplies for Nome, seeing as it had to be sorta realistic.

---

A Sled Dog's Tale

A cool wind swept across an abandoned Alaskan plain, playing gently with the small leaves of the evergreens. Small round balls of frozen rain fell from the light grey clouds above onto the surroundings of the land below. Everything was peaceful, nature quietly expecting the incoming storm.

Faint barks sounded from a small gathering of trees near a frozen over lake, and soon, seven tall, broad sled dogs could be seen, supplies being dragged behind them. The lead had a thick pelt, black as the midnight sky. His ice blue eyes shone with determination as he led the team across the crisp, arctic land, snow hitting his face. His paws treaded the ground with every giant stride he took. The dog panted, listening intentley for any orders thrown out by the musher, but none came yet. A slight smile arose over the leader’s muzzle as he thought about what he would do when the team arrived back in Nome, Alaska.

“You’re doing good, guys! Just a little further.” The lead barked, not bothering with turning his head to look at his team. It was too risky to take his eyes off the path. There could be a small pond somewhere, where the water had frozen over. The ice could break under one of their paws, causing the whole team to get stuck and delayed.

“Keyo,” The dog behind him piped up. He was a purebred Alaskan Malamute, strong in build and larger than the Siberian Husky leader, yet his leadership skills were still in training. His silver fur blew in the harsh, blizzard wind, his panting quite loud. His ears were erect, also listening for any of the musher’s orders. “Keyo, we’re so tired. I don’t know if we’ll all be able to make it. We haven’t had rest in such a long time, can’t we stop?” Keyo narrowed his eyes as he heard these words.

“No Tundra, we will get to Nome. It’s not that far away. Don’t you remember? In the spring. This isn’t a frozen over plain of nothing. It blooms with grass, not a speck of snow in sight. The trees…the trees are beautiful. The way they blow in the gentle breeze. We run over the ground in training. You remember where we are now?” Keyo threw a quick glance back towards Tundra, awating an answer, but nothing came except for a slight sigh. Either the Malamute wanted rest excruciatingly bad, or he was remembering the words that Keyo had just spoken. Either way, the team was not going to stop.

Back in Nome…

A small husky padded back and forth, awaiting the return of her brave mate, Keyo. He and the team had gone out to fetch fresh supplies for Nome, vital for the survival of the town. It was a harsh winter and the food suppy was running short, so teams were sent out to get meat and hides from the neighbouring towns. Keyo’s team would be the last to arrive.

The tan female had a nervous look to her golden eyes, darting back and forth between both possible returning routes. She tried to make sence of the human’s talk that was going on around her, but so far, she knew no news about the team. Suddenly, a loud yelping came from the right of her, distant, but she knew the overpowering voice of the lead dog. The husky perked up, letting out a long, beautiful howl out of her muzzle, her fur being blown around by the winter wind. The team begun to pull into the arriving zone, the lead dog swinging his head around wildly, looking for someone important.

------------

Keyo glanced around in exctiment, looking for his mate, Taylor. He finally laid his eyes on her, watching in gleefulness as he saw the wind ruffling through her fur. “Taylor…” He whispered, feeling himself being unlatched from the harness. As soon as the musher had unhooked him, Keyo leapt over in the direction of him mate, nuzzling her furiously. He pulled away, smiling as Taylor licked his frozen muzzle.

“Keyo,” She mumbled to him softly, her voice like the sound of the morning birds, “I knew you would make it…”

The End

Like I said, it's quite short, but I hope you've enjoyed reading it ;D
