Well, the hard, ugly truth is that, if you
were to base it on the real facts, you'd have to show Togo being passed over in all the attention which was lavished upon Balto once the team arrived in Nome. Not even the rest of Balto's team received much notice.
You'd have to show how Togo wandered back to his owner (Leonhard Seppala's) kennels a few days later, having broke free from the team (with another dog, who also returned with Togo) to chase after a rabbit. You'd have to show Seppala's worrying about how Togo would end up in a fox trap, or being shot by a hunter because, in Sepp's view, he looked so much like a wolf (though he was on the small side).
And in all actuality, we don't know whether or not Togo and Balto were familiar with each other. Even though both were owned by Seppala, and kept in his kennels, it is at least possible that they were kept in separate pens.
Still, a nice thought about the friendship thing...
