That's a good question. Every official source has mentioned him being young. He seems to be around 2.5-3 human years.

The real Balto was about two years old when the diptheria outbreak occurred. I guess that the cartoon one is probably the same.

Why don't they just carbon-date a piece of fur from his stuffed body? And isn't 6 a bit old for a sled dog?
How old do you guys think Steele was in the movie? He seems to be about 5 or 6.

In the first movie I think he is 1-1/2, or possibly 2 years. we know in WQ Aleu is 1 year old when she ran off. but she was probably born about 3 month's after The serum run. Th events in WoC probably happened about a year after WQ events so Balto is probably 3 years 3 months to 4 years. at least that's how I see it Sheba

Balto seems two, and Steele four to me.

Sheba 3 months? Is that how long gestation is for a dog?

Sheba 3 months? Is that how long gestation is for a dog? I thought it was two, however that might be just for wolves.

BetaWolf wrote: 3 months? Is that how long gestation is for a dog? No, I guessed that Aleu was born in spring, possibly about 3 months after the serum run. it was very approximate guess, it was probably too short.

Togo wrote: BetaWolf wrote: Why don't they just carbon-date a piece of fur from his stuffed body? And isn't 6 a bit old for a sled dog? Because the fur changes during a dog's life, and carbon-date isn't that precise as far as I know. You're right about that. Carbon dating has registered things as "millions of years old," when they were freshly killed- in one case (snail shells, I believe) actually still living! It would be great if someone could design a rough timeline for the movies and the events pertaining to them (such as Balto's birth).

Oh... so then there might only be a few months between 1 and WQ after all.

I looked the pregnancy length up this morning, it's 60-62 days, and the serum run ended early February-ish, which could mean Aleu was born as early as late March or April.
