Here it is... since you've given me nothing to go on about her character I've basically made something a bit different. Enjoy...
THE GOOD SHEPARD (An extremely short story) (Based on a story idea by FLARE) Text and Dialogue by Andrew Heighway
Nome, Alaska... Winter, 1932.
“Life isn’t fair... if it was then dogs like you and I would be much more than post office workers. It’s like a lottery that only seems to pay out to those who deserve it less than I do. But the trick is to make the best of what little you may have... after all it’s the only thing that keeps me going.”
One Hour before...
Kaname was just sitting inside a boiler room next to Kodiak. Kaname; the German Sheppard was tired after her ordeal earlier that day just after the mail run had finished. Kodiak was just looking across the room trying to ignore the pain from a flesh cut on his left paw. She was grateful for what he had done for her that day as no one else would have bothered... she was that much of a miss fit even her own mother would have let her drop from the ledge. But not Kodiak, a hero in his own right. Kaname then looked at Kodiak’s injury, she felt guilty that he had to get hurt just to save her own skin. “You should get someone to look at that” she said softly. Kodiak didn’t answer right away, he just nodded at first. “... I’ll see Boris about it later.” He replied. “You should see someone about it now, you don’t want it to get infected...” she continued. “I’ll do that later.” Interrupted Kodiak in an almost irritated tone. “I’m... gonna stay here for a while. It’s warm in here.” He continued. Kaname couldn’t shake off the feeling of guilt, it was something that had been with her most of her life and now more than ever it was eating away at her. Kodiak seemed to be her only chance... to finally tell the truth about why she had been so bitter. “I guess you want to know why I came back to Nome... after all it has been a while.” She said trying to lean against Kodiak for comfort. “Not long enough in my view.” He snapped. “You have every right to be angry... but it wouldn’t have... it just wouldn’t. You and I live in completely different worlds. Yours is about heroism and honour, like father like son I guess... while the only thing on my mind was how I could get my own back on those who claimed I couldn’t amount to anything. But I didn’t think for a moment that you’d...” Kodiak then just stormed to the other side of the room and sat facing away from her. “I think you better leave now. If you’re just here to explain yourself so you can feel that tiny bit better then you can just go, I have no interest treading in old territory with you. A lot has happened in my life since you’ve been gone. You don’t know me anymore.” Kaname then approached him. “Actually, I know you better than anyone else, not even mommy and daddy can scratch that squeaky clean surface you have. I know the real you... I know how dark you can be when you want to and I’m smelling it right now, you’re right though... a lot has happened to you over the years. You’re no longer that little puppy who couldn’t wait to get that mail delivered”. Kodiak didn’t respond, he just sat there. Like he just didn’t care anymore. “I came back to say sorry mostly. Not that it means much. But I did join the team to get my life back together, not to spite you or anything... I couldn’t do that... at least not to you.” “Spite is the only thing you know. What was that story again Kaname? Nearly beating you’re own sister to death for what... because some other guy you liked preferred her over you. It’s no wonder you’re own family wants nothing to do with you... further more I want nothing to do with you.” Kaname then jus laid down behind Kodiak. “So why did you save me from that fall? You could have just dropped me.” “A moment of weakness I guess” “You don’t believe that. Besides, what would dear daddy say to that?” asked Kaname. “Go to Cleveland and ask him yourself.” There was another moment of silence between them both, but then Kodiak just turned around to face her. “I saved your life because I knew I’d be no better than you if I had let you drop, it would be no better than Steele, Niju or any other twisted creep that my father had defeated over the years. With him not around anymore someone has to be the hero, to rise above things that may have happened ages ago.” “If that’s the case... then why can’t you forgive me?” “It’s not the same.” Said Kodiak as he was sitting down again. “Dad would save Steele’s life if necessary... but it doesn’t mean that he would forgive him for the years of grief, bullying and torment. There are just some things you can’t take back no matter how sorry you are... If you wanna be on the team fine, I’ll be civil and wag my tail... but we’re not friends or something more... never again.” Kaname just got up and started to explain... “When I was kid... I was growing up in Montana along with my sister and an older brother. We where all strays ever since both my parents died. The most boring place on earth was our home, it was so boring that it seemed to make everyone bitter since they knew nothing would ever happen to them. It was a cold winter just like this one when my older brother decided he’d had enough of having nothing to eat... so he made a deal with two complete strangers... a piece of meat from the butcher’s shop... in exchange for. Well you can guess...” Kodiak’s brow lowered, he understood the meaning very clearly. “It took me a long time.” Continued Kaname “A very long time to even look him in the eye again after what he did, my sister was the same. After what happened between you and me I started to think about those days again... I realised that holding a grudge for too long can be more damaging to the innocent bystanders then to the origin of the grudge. Once I realised that, I knew it just wasn’t worth it anymore... and guess what... I can finally say I have a brother now. Although he may not know it... I forgive him.” Kodiak still didn’t respond. “I’m gonna be here for a long time my sweet, get used to it. Who knows, you may finally find it in you’re big heroic heart to forgive and forget... like I have, it will seem unfair. Life isn’t fair... if it was then dogs like you and I would be much more than post office workers. It’s like a lottery that only seems to pay out to those who deserve it less than I do. But the trick is to make the best of what little you may have... after all it’s the only thing that keeps me going. I’ll see you around babe.” She said as she walked off into the snowy whether outside. When she was gone, Kodiak closed his eyes for a moment and whispered to himself... “I forgive you...”
THE END
