This idea was inspired by Snowboarder Doby's post Registering Suggestion (now locked)

How about having a automatic introduction PM sent to new members when they have registered, including explanations what can/cant be don on the various pages and a link to the rules, how to make avatar's etc.
for example commenting on the news is only for comments to do with the news-no comments like hi I'm new here etc.

this wouldn't force people to read the rulesbu it would make them more awar tha they are there.
It ma also reduce questions and misplaced comments.

It does sound like a good idea to me,but others might disagree.

Well, yes, I could do this, but this would have to be short or no one would bother reading it.
In fact I already send an email with the login / password and a link to the rules, but not everyone register with a valid email address. So yes, a PM would be better.
I'll add this to the to-do list...

To me, that sounds like a pretty good idea. Maybe less new members would be using SMS, and spamming on the shoutboxes, and stuff. Alot of people don't read the rules under the shoutbox, and the forums. And Balto Source would become a happier place... O_x  But I think its still a good idea.

In my opinion, a valid e-mail adress must be put in order to register on any site. Why don't you use the e-mail validation? It would avoid problems (like this one, or in case you want to send a mass e-mail or anything like that).

There are two reasons :
1/ I prefer the sites which offer quick registering, and I hate having to go back to my emails to validate my registration. I just HATE that. So I suppose I'm not the only one. And, there aren't any other good way to make sure an email address is valid.
2/ Some children can't have access to an email account, for example their parents forbid them to have one. Yes, I suppose they shouldn't be able to register on the site in that case, but well...

EDIT:and I've just thought about an intresting thing: if you ask the validation and don't allow to have more than 1 account per e-mail adress, this will stop all the membes who make lots of accounts (especially RayJ). :P

They would just make free email accounts. It would just slow them down, but wouldn't change that much.

Err...I'm not sure you REALLY know how a banned visitor can act.
And it depends where, but there are email accounts from where you can register in 30 seconds. Or even less, there are even temporary / alias accounts you can make to avoid being spammed, and that only requires entering a name.
