Last love Like most stories begin, I was born on a warm February day along with my five other siblings. We were all similar but our futures were going to be very different. Life can be a rather weird thing if you think about it. Why bother living if it’s all going to end. All these rules to follow, not wanting to disappoint anyone and the love, which seems to be so great but no one can find the true one. Many days passed and I along with my siblings grew older, our loving parents taught us how to tell the right from the wrong and how to deal with live before the day when we were supposed to be adopted came. I and my siblings weren’t sure what to feel about it. Should we be happy about getting our own human to take care of us or should we be scared of being thrown into the world still so young? The box we were placed in wasn’t that big but we could play around and knock each other down. We expressed our feelings in different ways, cheering, playing and howling, though it was only one of us who did that and our parents didn’t approve. I wondered why but my attention was caught by young kids around the box. All of my siblings were showing off but I just watched. What was the point? It would be good if a human wanted me, but I didn’t beg for this. One by one, we were picked up. In the end, I was picked up by a young man, his hands were hard as he kept stroking me like a cat. I was unsure about the first impression I should have of him but I decided no to judge him by his look. As we came to his house I got another bad impression, it smelt bad and rather trashy but it was okay, he had made a spot he was probably going to give to his future dog which was me. I ran over to it and lay down making myself comfortable before falling into a deep sleep.
One year passed and I was given the name Ginger by my owner whose name was David. My red body was rather muscular but yet feminine, I was the only one of my litter that had my own markings; I was called red faced because I was the only who had a white muzzle and a belly of the same colour. I had my dad’s feet markings and my tail was almost completely white but was a bit red also. My owner gave me a green bandana which I wore around my neck. David was a hunter and I was his hunting companion. He trained me and I could sniff out forest animals easily. Life was good; David was also nice to me. I couldn’t believe how I had judged him at first. He trained me hard. I was one of the best hunting dogs in Nome. He told me when so he talked to me at night, hoping I understood … and I did. I trusted him and he trusted me. Our lives weren’t one of those big fancy dreams but we didn’t need anything else. One day, walking through town I saw my dad. He came running over to me happily; I didn’t understand how he could be happy almost all the time. Every time I looked at him, he was either smiling or laughing and it irritated me sometimes but it also made me glad. He could always see the positive things in life. My dad didn’t like my owner David; he thought he was disgusting because of how he lived. He tried to make me to run away but, of course, I didn’t. “Hello there, Ginger!” He said and nuzzled me, “How are you today?” He asked as he looked into my blue eyes with his brown ones. “I’m good, dad.” I said hoping if I could get away from him fast, because I knew that David was going to train me later that day. “You know, if David ever does anything that you won’t be okay with, you can always come and live on the boat with me!” He said in his I’m worried about you tone he used very often when he was speaking with me and my other siblings. “Oh, here we go again, dad! Can’t you accept that David is a good guy? He would do everything for me!” I said angrily. “So you can just go with all your worries and talk about them with someone else!” I wasn’t in the mood to argue with him so I stormed off and left him alone in his parental thoughts. Coming home, I saw that David was waiting for me and my bowl was full of food. I happily walked over to it and ate my fill, expecting David wanting to go training. I barked happily as I finished but he only smiled. “Save it for tomorrow,” he said. Then went into his bedroom and closed the door behind him. I was left in my thoughts. He never mentioned we were going hunting tomorrow, there was probably need of some more meat in the meat store, I thought before falling asleep on my blanket. David woke up early and started packing the next day, I just watched him tiredly as he was getting ready. When everything was set, he called me and we went off into the mountain hillside where we had usually hunted. I waited for my orders. As he got his gun, I barked happily. Then we were off. We walked for few hours catching a small prey like rabbits only. But then, our lucky moment came. We saw a calf walking through the forest. It seemed to be lost from his mother. David got ready to shoot and I waited for the order. But something wasn’t right. A large shadow was cast down at us and we both looked up. We had woken up a bear from its winter slumber and it was not happy. The bear charged at David but my mind was ready to react so I attacked the bear’s paw before he could lay a single claw on David. The bear was large and my small dog body couldn’t hold him so he threw me off. But he was no longer interested in David. Now he charged at me. I looked around hoping that David was going to help me but what I saw was one of the most horrible things I had ever seen in my life. David ran away and left his gun behind and... Me too. The bear was on top of me now, roaring down at me and its claw dug into my skin. It hit me with its other paw across the face so I got a large cut. I cried out in pain but no one was there to hear it. I closed my eyes waiting for the death blow but the bear seemed to have been distracted. I opened one of my eyes slowly and saw a large black and brown wolf hanging on the bears back. I got up quickly and jumped away as the bear fell backwards on the ground. “Run!” I heard the wolf scream at me and I didn’t need to be told twice. We both took off as fast as we could. The bear ran after us but quickly gave up and went back. I didn’t want to stop running but the blood loss was making me dizzy so I fell to the ground. The wolf stopped and looked back to make sure the bear wasn’t following us anymore before walking back to me. “Are you okay?” he asked. I wasn’t sure about the tone in his voice. He didn’t know me so he wasn’t supposed to be worried but it looked like he was. “I’m fine.” I answered and stood up, but my feet were too weak to carry my weight so I fell back down. Suddenly, I felt his head under my stomach. He was trying to lift me, but why? Finally, he got me on his back and he carried me to a small cave and we both fell to the ground as soon as we were in. “Why are you helping me?” I asked. It was the top questions of many I wanted to ask that wolf. He just smiled tiredly “Because no one deserves to die because of humans!” He answered finally. Oh, so he had seen everything that had happened, I thought awkwardly, but didn’t want to bring it up. “Thank you!” I said and smiled before my heavy eyelids fell down, making me fall into deep slumber. Days passed and the wolf whose name was Niyol helped me to get better again. I enjoyed his company and we talked about everything, but he never told me anything about his past. One night, we sat outside his small cave watching the nature around us. Our lungs were filled with cold air as we breathed and I couldn’t think of a better moment in my life. Looking up, I could see his green soft eyes looking down at me, he gave me a warm smile and I smiled back. Suddenly, I felt his warm fur closer to me and he laid his head on mine. I sighed happily and closed my eyes hoping this moment could last forever. Minutes went past and we sat there still. Without a warning something jumped on Niyol and knocked him down to the ground. Five wolfs stood over us growling and showing their large fangs and claws. I ran to Niyol but one of the wolves was faster and jumped onto my back, his large claws digging into my fur and I could feel them touching my bones. “You traitor!” One of the wolves shouted at Niyol angrily as he grabbed Niyol’s neck by his fangs. The wolf on top of me seemed distracted watching the leader of the group so I kicked him off and ran at the wolf holding Niyol down, knocking him off. Niyol stood up and started running shouting to me to do the same. We ran as fast as our paws could carry us but the wolves seemed to had gotten some good training because they caught up with us fast. They tried to slow us down with biting which wasn’t going very well but one of them caught hold of my back leg making me trip along with him. Niyol stopped and ran towards me but the wolves were in his way. “You thought you could just run away after what happened and leave it whole in the past?” The leader questioned snarling at him but Niyol only stood there watching them. His eyes were not showing fear but disgust. “Let her go and we can settle this between us” Niyol said pointing towards me. The leader’s eyes turned towards me and smirked “Let’s have her the prize,” he said and looked back at Niyol but not fast enough because he had used the opportunity to attack and held his head to the ground. “LET HER GO!” He said angrily baring his white fangs. His green eyes were not leaving the other wolves’ faces. The group of wolfs that stood by all came running towards Niyol expect the one holding me down. I was only able to watch my thoughts were rushing through my head “What had he done? Who were these wolves? What will happen?” Niyol couldn’t hold the wolves off and fell to the ground with all of them on top. Suddenly, a loud crack noise was heard from underneath them. All of the wolves stopped and looked for the source of the noise. But then they noticed it, the large crack forming in the ground under them. They were fighting on frozen water and their weight had broken it. The crack started to form around them, water was now visible and the ice was shaking. The wolves freaked out and all jumped from the plate forming except Niyol and the wolf leader they kept fighting. Finally the wolf holding me let go and ran along with the others. I ran to the place were the crack was forming but it was too late. Niyol jumped at the wolf and both of them went flying into the icy cold water. “NO!” I screamed as loud as I could but what good did it do? I looked into the water hoping for Niyol to return. Few seconds went past and I didn’t even let myself blink “Where was he?” I thought. Suddenly, I saw something move in the water. It was black and brown; I didn’t think and jumped in the water to help him. I bit his scruff and tried to swim back to the surface the cold water was getting the hold of me, I felt sleepy and I wanted so badly just to close my eyes but I didn’t let myself. I fought and finally came to the surface. I pushed Niyol up before me and then with a lot of strength I pushed myself up on the ice. I was cold but I didn’t care. I ran to Niyol, the ice around him was turning red I laid my head on to his and closed my eyes...I wished for him to move, but my pray was ignored. His body just lay frozen on the ice. I didn’t want to open my eyes again. I was shaking from the cold that had taken all the strength from my body. Suddenly, a familiar howl came to me like in a dream. I opened my eyes not feeling cold anymore. Niyol was standing there. He smiled to me his soft smile and his eyes sparkling with joy. I ran to him happily wagging my tail and nuzzled him. Looking back on the spot where I had been lying, I saw two creatures lying there still, snow starting to cover their bodis. At last glance I could see they were smiling. But now Niyol was waiting for me along with the mystical white wolf, I followed them, they both smiled to me and I knew I had found all the things I had been looking for. Home and love...
