Sing-along songs are used in animated movies as filler. Never does a low budget movie with unmotivated producers make it through without horrible sing-along lyrics.

Balto, the first Balto, had a good enough plot to last its entire length. Producers for one didn't need songs to take up any more time. That, and Balto was a respectable movie based off an event to be taken seriously. When poor, little, sick kids are dropping like flies back in Nome, you wouldn't want to see Balto and Jenna tap-dancing on a ice burg singing about being a part of the "Grand Design."

Wolf Quest and Wings of Change are much wackier and awkward than the first. It's easier for all the characters to simultaneously break out in immaculate chorus when the plot isn't serious to begin with.

All this doesn't apply to musicals like Lion King, or Little Mermaid. These movies were built on their music.

Because the first Balto wasn't meant to be a musical, unlike most Disney movies. In Balto 2 and 3 Universal made the director Phil Weinsten put some songs in the sequels, so the children would have been happier (this is what I've heard).

I guess because no one really thought that songs would do the movie any good. That's one of the reasons I like the 1st Balto; it's not just some other 70-minute, fun-for-the-whole-family style sing-a-long!

The Lion King?

hehe agree :)
