have a look at this pic from the grizzly bear scene-Balto looks like he is breathing from an air-pocket! This however brings up the question of why Balto didn't make his own way out. i think it was because he didn't want to lose the air-pocket to find a way out. and also the producers probably wanted to make the story of how Muk and Luk could actually swim. That could be a reason too-thanx Togo, by the way I love your avvy. In that still, it dose look like that might be it but in the movie he looks like he is breathing from it, have a look Thanx, both of you, Sheba

If you ever look closely at something filled with water, you'll no doubt notice little bubbles or pockets of air that were not filled, which is the same with this case I believe. To me, it seems like Balto was just trying to stay alive as long as possible.

In that scene I've always seen it as Balto kissing the ice, not breathing from an air pocket. He was unconscious when Muk and Luk broke through the ice too, and if that was an air pocket he wouldn't be.
Also when Luk landed on Balto, Balto spews a lot of water out. Again, not really possible if that was an air pocket.

I always thought it was pretty self explanatory, Balto fell under the ice and started to run out of breath. He found an air pocket abd breathed in the precious little amount of air trapped there under the ice to stay alive for longer.
