I was wondering....does the pound and animal rescue do the right thing? I don't think so I watched a show this morning called "Heroes:Phoniex"and as I was watching a kitten was stuck in a tree and the rescuers shot water at the cat once the cat was nearly down the tree but still on the branch. They put a collar with a stick attached to it (Not sure what the stick is called) and once they got it around the cats neck and dragged it out of the tree. What if they're was sticks poking from out of the tree in the way of where they were dragging the cat? The cat would probaly get poked in the stomach and die if it went threw it's stomach ! And another thing they shot a dart into a dog because it was running away! They might of killed it like if it got in the dog's head and went straight threw the dogs skull! And than about the pounds. They keep the dogs and cats in cages! The animals should have freedom! And why do they put down an animal? Just because no one has adopted it yet doesn't mean the animals shouldn't be given a second chance am I correct? I find it okay that the vets put the animal down because it was sick and the sickness wouldn't go away. But anyway do you think the pound and animal rescue does the right thing?

I would say half and half.
Often, when rescuing animals, the people doing so are highly trained at tranquilizing animals. They are careful not to hit any vital areas. Also, the long collar on a stick (called a loop) does not hurt or harm the animal. The loop causes less stress, and is useful for catching angry or frightened animals.
And about the pound. Yes, it seems cruel that the dogs and cats etc are cooped up in little cages. But there really is no other option, and they don't stay in there for very long anyway.
But as for putting down animals, I'd agree with you there. It's a humane way to end a creature's life, especially if it is dying of a terminal illness.
But it's unfair to put something healthy down. Everything has a right to a life.

Well, if there were sticks, I'd think they'd yank the sticks off of the tree or at least try to get the cat down another way. You'd probably only be allowed to shoot a dart gun if you have extremely good aim.
But I don't believe they should kill the animal for not being adopted, that's like what they do in an orphanage somewhere in Russia, once kids reached a certain age they are kicked out on the streets to live. I'm guessing it's because they want to make room for animals that really need their help.
I understand their reasons for keeping the animals in cages, they simply don't have enough room if they keep their office in the city, which most seem to do. I personally believe they should have their office, vets room, cages for sick and weak animals, and large yard dogs and cats at night on a farm. The trustworthy, strong, and healthy animals can be turned loose on the farm in the day and put in the large yards with members of their own species at nights (Say all the dogs get in one yard and all the cats in another yard.) I'm guessing they're afraid the animals might get hurt again or run off, but they won't always.
I think they should change some of their practices, but they don't alway have the ability to if they want to give every animal a chance to live and find a home. Most of these answers are just guesses, but that's what I think.

I 100% think that what they do is right.
Quote: They put a collar with a stick attached to it (Not sure what the stick is called) and once they got it around the cats neck and dragged it out of the tree. What if they're was sticks poking from out of the tree in the way of where they were dragging the cat? The cat would probaly get poked in the stomach and die if it went threw it's stomach ! The reason they do that is because they don't want to get scratched up! The people that use those are HIGHLY trained and know how to work it right. If they hadn't used that, the cat could have hurt not only itself, but the people trying to help it, too. Using the pole is the SAFEST way to catch an animal. Quote: And another thing they shot a dart into a dog because it was running away! They might of killed it like if it got in the dog's head and went straight threw the dogs skull! It's called a tranqulizer dart. They do not kill animals unless you use to high of a dosage of it. You can't kill a dog just by shooting a tranqulizer dart into it's head. They've done that before. Quote: And than about the pounds. They keep the dogs and cats in cages! The animals should have freedom! That is one of the most rediculous things I've heard. While I'm all for animal rights and stuff, animals in pounds need to stay in cages. You can't just have them running around! That's not only unsanitary, but unsafe. Not all the animals would get along with eachother, obviously! Quote: And why do they put down an animal? Just because no one has adopted it yet doesn't mean the animals shouldn't be given a second chance am I correct?
Actually, no you are not correct. Tons of pounds all over the country don't have enough room to keep animals that aren't wanted. While I think there should be another way then putting them to sleep, there isn't. It's just the way things are. There ARE no kill shelters, though, but even those have limited room.
Before making asumptions like this again, I suggest that you are at least slightly educated in what you are speaking about.

I don't know.. well, I must say that the RSPCA that came to take a dog called Marley away from the boarding kennels where I was doing work experience didn't really handle the situation very well. They weren't very friendly with him and tried to drag him into their van even though he obviously wasn't going to get in. Then they got a muzzle out and this made him even more scared.
I guess it depends though.
As for putting animals to sleep if they're not rehomed, I think this depends on what the dog is like. If it's a friendly dog who isn't being adopted because it's just bad luck or because I don't know, he has three legs or something then I don't agree with it. Neither do I agree with what I see on Animal Cops where Pit Bulls are put to sleep because they've been used for fighting - especially when they're so friendly towards humans.
I suppose the only case that I agree with pounds putting dogs to sleep is when they have a genuine behavourial issue and is a threat towards other dogs and humans.
The dogs trust, which is where I got Archie from never put a healthy dog to sleep. They have this whole 'Sponsor a dog' thing where if the dog isn't suitable to be rehomed because of behavioural issues or special medication then they keep it at the centre and people can pay a certain amount of money per month for its treatment. If it's a safe dog, then they can come and visit it and maybe walk it. You get letters each month from the dog you sponsor.
I don't sponsor one, but my cousin does.

People put animals down because they don't have room for more, and those were put up for adoption. Or, the animal is vicious, and no matter how much they try to change it, it'll keep being agressive. This is because the owners abuse them. And the pole, doesn't harm the animal, to me, I think it helps, especially when the animal is agressive, cause with a simple leash, or rope, it could bite the handler, not to mention they aren't yet sure if it has rabies.
