I would bet this is for another Land before time or Curious george sequel...
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. Studios are disgustingly uncreative when it comes to animated films.
But here is something to think about. The studio wants 2-5 Years Experience. Charles Grosvenor (director of the recent 7 Land Before Times) has been the director of animated films since 1993. That draws him out. I don't think he's going to quit the Land Before Time series if he has already done seven of them. So chances are it won't be another Land Before Time! Bliss!
The Curious George possibility is still out there. I can see that the studio will let a young director loose on a sequel because young directors are cheap. The purpose of sequels is to bring in more money. The studio hopes that the reputation of the last film can provide for the sequel. The studio makes a cheap sequel, people go see it, the studio gets more profit and didn't do much work in the process. This is why sequels are terrible on average.
I hate to rain on everyone's parade but I don't think it will be another Balto. Universal tried with the first Balto. It was a swing and a miss at the box office. Universal tried with Balto 2. It was a swing and a miss and didn't provide that much excitement. Universal tried again with Balto 3. It was a swing and a miss due to no advertising. The producers at Universal are thinking the 3-strikes-and-you're-out rule. They think Balto failed and there's no point to keep it alive. Of course, Universal are idiots for mishandling the 3 films but they don't want to blame themselves.
I don't know what Universal is thinking with this new animation director. But I'm skeptical on how good it's going to be.
