I just got into an argument with my parents, and i hope some of you can help me out. We were arguing about my art skills, with my parents saying i should take an art class(ive never taken one), but i prefer to stay a self-taught artist and work my way up to a professional myself. What should i do? Should i take my parents' advice and take a class, or continue to learn on my own? If this gets locked or moved, its alright with me.

Hmm... I'll give you advice from experience.

Last year, I decided to take an art class to better improve my art skills. I figured, "Hey, it'll improve my style by teaching me methods to use and detail." To be honest, it didn't. We spent 18 weeks drawings Grid Art, which, predictably, doesn't help with my drawing wolves. We moved on to draw "correctly prospectived houses, railroads, and telephone poles". To be honest, this was a total waste of my time. Exspecially 18 weeks!

I'd say try to classic (and better) trail-and-error method. We all know of "Golden Wolf", she used the trail-and-error, and look at how fabulous her art is.

But you have to realize that a "professional level" of art cannot be reached by learning one thing, it takes years.

Hope this helps... But overall, it's your choice on what you want to do with your art.

Id say try some lessons and see if you feel like your learning from them.

Problem with art lessons is that most of them fail to teach techniques and fundaments. Make sure you learn all about colour, perspective, anatomy, and basic art principles.

I'm kinda a self taught artist, and telling the truth, I have that argument too. Although I prefer to learn by myself, instead of using other people's technique. Choose the one you think is better. In art class, the only thing we drew were puppets, and fruit and stuff like that, so I preffer self teaching myself, because I'm used to drawing animals easily. But I have to admit, I need help with my shading. Hope that helps! ^^

take art class, its fun, they teach you different methods of drawing, painting, etc. with many different tools. but you can also freedraw and practice at home. im also self-taught, i inhertited the talent from my dad.

Do what you feel is best. Don't let other people, including your parents, tell you what you should and shouldn't do. It's your life, not theirs.

I'm also self-taught. You couldn't drag me into an art class that isn't for school. I only went to my school's art class because I had to, and I ain't the kind to rebel. All you might learn is what a vertical line is and how to, well we didn't learn art things that I'm into. We learned the parts of art, like lines and color, but it was scarce that we put pencil to paper and drew. I didn't make a half-decent recreation of American Gothic for art class by going to art class. I did it by years of practice and observation. I think you'd be better off if you didn't go to art-class, you could change you drawing style for the better in the time it takes you to get to art class. (I'm not saying that your style is bad, heck, I haven't even seen your work! I'm guessing it's great though! :D I'm just saying that I've figured out key ways to change my artwork to look more realistic in a short time, a few seconds of thought can permanently change your style.)

Definately take an art class. I didn't in high school. That was a big mistake. It really helps if you have a well-funded program too because they can give you more advanced tools to work with.

Well, I'm a self taught artist and I prefer to be self taught. I learn from my errors and often use advanced artist's pictures to get better for anatomy.^^ So when a art class came to our school I didn't bother taking it since I knew wolves wouldn't be a subject.-_- But my sister took it and when she finished she didn't improve at all.

If you want to make your talent into a career, then I highly suggest that you take the art classes because employers would like some education backing you up.

If it's a fun hobby that you personally like to do, go ahead and be self taught.
