I ordered the VHS tape, and it just came in today. However, when I opened it up, I noticed something.

It's the DVD boxart!

This is the DVD boxart, right?

And this is the VHS boxart, correct?

Mine definitely has the DVD boxart. It doesn't have the DVD symbol anywhere though, but it does say "Digitally mastered" on the back. It came sealed (probably resealed), and had no special offer coupons or anything in it. Was it supposed to come with any?

Oh yeah, it even says "Copyright 2001 Universal" on the bottom of the back cover.

What is wrong here? If this is some "digitally mastered" or "updated" version with fixed audio, I will be very upset!

Why don't you watch it? If their is nothing you notice wrong then I assume not.

I'm equally worried that this might be some counterfeit. It's not just the audio and stuff. You know... I'll post a scan of it later.

Well that's very simple : this is the VHS release which came out with the DVD release in 2001/2002, and not the previous VHS release in 1995.
Actually, you would have been very lucky to find the previous release, since it's becoming really old now...
I don't think there are so many differences though.
Although I don't understand the reasons you would buy the lower quality VHS version instead of the DVD one...? A DVD player doesn't cost anything nowadays...

Well, apparently the Region 1 Balto DVD is considered by many to be no better than the 1996 VHS. I think that the VHS re-release in 2002 was just a simple repackaging.

It's entirely different. It's actually a VHS with the DVD ripped onto it. It's got the ET 2002 theater ad, Wolf Quest trailer, Beethoven 4 trailer, and all that.

I watched the movie with outdated VHS quality when I was young. It has sentimental value. I prefer anything how it was, not enhanced.

Nope, it's not. As stated above, it's a VHS with the DVD ripped onto it. It's entirely different.

Doesn't cut it for me. I probably won't be satisfied until I find the '96 release somewhere.

I have another question though: does the old Balto release have outdated audio, like most early 90's movies do?

One more thing...

The original sold about 4 million, didn't it? I doubt that the re-release sold nearly that much, and it's not being manufactured anymore. There's a lot more original releases in circulation, so I'm actually unlucky to have the newer release.

That one is better than the new VHS or the DVD anyday.

You can often get your hands on a second-hand '96 copy from Ebay.
