I often hear people say that too many people are indifferent nowadays. Quite frankly, I think the exact oposite is true.
Alow me to elaborate.
I can see how someone could become appaled at the indifference that is nowadays commonplace when it comes to important issues like human, or animal, suffering: if thousands and thousands of human beings are being masacred in the Sudanese province of Darfur, it pretty much your duty as a human to care greatly about that, and to voice your oppinion (or even better, act). Similarly (though less of a human duty), if you believe it would be wrong to (partialy) eradicate a certain animal species in some part of the world, please, do complain.
But some of the things you hear nowadays, both in the media and on this forum, are going a bit too far: people are really complaining about everything nowadays. Be it about Paris Hilton or misposts, once someone speaks up, fierce discussions always ensue. And I just can't help but think: people, please, stop caring!
A rant about ranting.

Well Cogitor, the fact is that these are just forums. Just because people rant about things does not mean that they actually care as much as it seems.
When people post about something on a forum, it doesn't necessarily mean that it bothers them that much. Now, if they started discussing it with people in real life, then it must really bother them.
It's like someone putting up a blog about a celebrity mishap rather than protesting it. The complaints here are not as major as they seem.

Apparantly... I guess there is still some divergence between the discussions you post on a forum and those you engage in when at the pub.

I probably worded myself wrong. Sometimes, I have trouble putting my thoughts into words... lol
The point I'm trying to make is that this is an internet forum. Forums are dedicated to sharing opinions, strong or weak. If someone posts something, it doesn't automatically mean that they feel strongly about their opinion. It's that it's an internet forum, and that's what it is meant for.
Would you go up to a random person in say, a mall, and talk about Balto? Nope, because they may not care. Malls are not for sharing opinions. But just because you may not do that in real life does not make you indifferent to it. It works the other way around on a forum: you may post negatively about Paris Hilton, but that doesn't mean that you care. It's just the fact that this is a forum, and that's what you do on a forum.

Still, even on a forum there are (multiple) ways to overdo it, and many are used even on BS. A good example would be flame-wars. Flame wars often start over pretty trivial matters, so trivial that I often wonder: are they flaming just for the fun of it? Or do they really care to such an extent (which would be the most unnerving option of the two)?
And then there is still the impression I get that people on forums act way more radical than they would in real life, getting personal and using those blasted caps (which presumably stands for shouting).

Hmm... perhaps I'm the one who doesn't get it then. I've only been here for 3 weeks so I don't know what things are really like here.

Unfortunately, we cannot stop caring dude.
and we can rant about whatever because of something called "The First Emendment" (or the Canadian Freedom of Speech section of the Act of 1982 in my case)
If we have something on our minds, we voice it. yes, I must agree that sometimes ranting does get a bit personal and has too much emotion and "caring" behind it, but most of the time the rants are meaningful and have a purpose;
to make people aware.
